COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- The challenge of facing a strong Air Force team proved too great for the Bears women's tennis team on Saturday morning, as they fell to the Falcons 5-0 to bring their spring record to 2-2. Although UNC failed to grab a team point in the match, they did record a number of close sets, which gave head coach Brenda Gallegos reason to be optimistic for the future of the team.
"The team performed well today. Every match was very close and could have gone either way. I really liked how hard we fought today and believe this is a great transitional match for tomorrow against Montana State."
The Falcons won the team doubles point to open the match. TJ Fumagalli and Elizabeth Barnickel defeated Beth Coton and Remi Immler, 6-4, at No. 1 while Chloe Forlini and Jocelle Rudico beat Rafa Mora and Cortney Schulte, 6-2, at No. 2. In singles action, Chloe Forlini beat Anna Battersby, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 and Barnickel beat Coton, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. Fumagalli beat Marissa Baca, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 while Lily Forlini defeated Schulte, 4-6, 7-6, 10-6. The other two singles matches did not finish.
The Bears will have a second chance to pick up a win on the weekend on Sunday when they return to Greeley to face Montana State (2-1) at 9:00am. The Bobcats will have played Wyoming on Saturday before traveling south to face UNC.
