Â
Scouting the Bears: The Bears began the tournament as the No. 3 seed with a record of 13-6-2 (5-3-2 Big Sky). Their semifinal match against Montana resulted in an improbable comeback 2-1 overtime victory. It was the first time in 19 games the Grizzlies allowed multiple goals in a game and also the first time all season the Grizzlies were defeated after scoring first. Mariel Gutierrez scored in the 75th minute and the Bears completely turned the momentum of the match at that point. In overtime, Maddie Roberts scored the game winning goal with five minutes remaining off a crossing pass from Brooke Braden.
Â
Offense: The Bears are led in most statistical categories by Jr. midfielder Mariel Gutierrez. Gutierrez has nine goals and six assists for 24 points. Â
Burdick has been assisted all season by an experienced defensive line. Seniors Erica Estes and Isabella Beal have played a majority of minutes and as a team, the Bears are holding opponents to 0.76 goals per game. Mariel Gutierrez, Anika Shelrud, Jaqui Pulley, and Madeline Burdick played all 105 minutes against Montana.
Â
The Bears won the Big Sky Championship in 2015 when they defeated Idaho in penalty kicks after tying 1-1 after overtime. In 2016, they lost in the quarterfinals to Northern Arizona.
