Montana State Too Much to Handle in Singles Play, Bears Lose 5-2
1/29/2017 3:10:00 PM | Men's Tennis
GREELEY, Colo.- Northern Colorado men's tennis wrapped up a weekend of tennis against Big Sky opponent Montana State on Sunday. Although they won two of three doubles matches, Montana State took care of business in singles and beat UNC 5-2. Junior Cassell King was able to win in singles in a ten-point tiebreak after coming back from a set down. Junior Connor Finerty found himself playing No. 1 singles, but was unable to summon the same three set magic he found on Saturday and lost 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-4 in a two-hour contest. The Bears will be back in Greeley to play North Dakota on February 5th.

6- UNC (Cassell King) def. MSU (Mateus Ceolin) 4-6, 6-4, 10-3
Time of the match: 4 hours, 5 minutes
Doubles Breakdown:
1. Alex Vakouftsis served first for the Bears, earning an easy hold serving wide and allowing Cramer to put away volleys in the middle of the court, not always a tried and true method. Hayden Cramer's first serve seemed to have some extra zip throughout the set, preferring the more traditional doubles approach of serving mostly up the T and into the opponent's body. In the end Alexander Flink and Rok Sitar were more precise for MSU with their volleys, earning the break of serve in the final game and winning the set 7-5. Time of the match: 39 minutes. Second doubles match to finish.
2. Kyle Pease and Cassell King struggled early and were not often enough the first team to come in to the net losing serve to go behind 2-3. They gradually became more aggressive and fought back to take the lead back 4-3, eventually winning the set 6-4 against MSU's Kellen Bates and Adrian Torrico. Time of the match: 37 minutes. First doubles match to finish.
3. With the doubles other matches split, No. 3 became the deciding match. Connor Finerty and Augstin Lombardi earned an early break but gave it right back. Returning at 6-5, an untimely double fault gave the Bears two break points at (15-40) and Lombardi finished the match off with a controlled high backhand volley. Time of the match: 50 minutes.
Singles Breakdown:
1. Recent strong match performances impressed interim head coach Ben Gendron enough to slot Connor Finerty in the Bears' top singles spot against Montana State. He was able to neutralize Kellen Bates' first serve with a low slice return and won a majority of the points in which he came to the net. After losing the first set, Finerty minimized his unforced errors in the second, winning it 6-2. The third set remained on serve until Finerty finally had his serve broken in the last game of the match. Time of the match: 2 hours, 1 minute.
2. Rok Sitar had more energy throughout the match and earned his first break of the match against Kyle Pease for 3-1, eventually taking the set 7-5. Pease served for the second set but was unable to hold. Sitar then went on to win the second set tiebreaker 7-4. Time of the match 1 hour 50 minutes.
3. Both Alex Vakouftsis and Adrian Torrico are exceptionally good movers, which made for an intriguing match with lots of long rallies. Torrico narrowly won the first set 7-5. Vakouftsis needed a break to stay in the second set but was unable to find it, losing the match 6-4, 7-5. Time of the match: 1 hour, 35 minutes.
4. Leading 4-3 in the first set, Hayden Cramer appeared to come up limping slightly after a backhand miss. Concern for a potential injury issue was dashed on the next point however when he came up with an acrobatic half-volley working forward toward the net. The first set went to Alexander Flink 7-5 capped by a nice backhand drop-volley on set point. Flink then cruised through the second set 6-3. Time of the match: 1 hour, 14 minutes.
5. Kasper Parlklo won a majority of baseline rallies to seal the victory for Montana State against UNC's Augstin Lombardi 6-3, 7-6(3).
6. Cassell King traded heavy forehands and backhands throughout the match with MSU's Mateus Ceolin. After losing the first set 6-4, King was able to battle back to win the second 6-4. Because the team match was already decided, the two played a ten-point tiebreaker in lieu of a third set. King got off to a quick 3-0 start and held on for the win 10-3.
