Bears Defeat Fighting Hawks 5-2 for First Victory of Spring Season

GREELEY, Colo.- The Bears picked up their first victory of spring against Big Sky opponent North Dakota by a score of 5-2 on Sunday in Greeley. Northern Colorado's No. 1 doubles team of Cassell King and Kyle Pease defeated North Dakota's Dustin Britton and Travis Lau in a tiebreaker 7-5 to secure the team doubles point for UNC.
Following in singles, the Bears came through in the close matches. Connor Finerty continued to play well and earned a victory over Dustin Britton, his third three-set match in a row and Hayden Cramer defeated Ty Misialek, battling back after losing the second set 6-2. Northern Colorado Interim Head Coach Ben Gendron was pleased with the performance he got from his team and his players were visibly proud to give Gendron his first collegiate victory as head coach.
Northern Colorado will continue their eight-match home stand when they face Montana (2-0, 0-0 Big Sky) on February 10th at Work Out West, Greeley

1- Going with a combination of senior Cassell King and freshman Kyle Pease, No. 1 doubles for UNC got off to a bit of a slow start dropping the first three games. UND's Travis Lau (Soph.) and Dustin Britton (R-Jun.) put pressure on throughout the set with strong volleys and a willingness to come to the net. With UND leading 5-2, the Bears stormed back to make it 5-5 after Lau missed a forehand volley. In the tiebreak, King hit a stunning crosscourt return to give the Bears the lead serving at 3-2. The Bears won match point when Lau missed a mid-court half volley. Time of the match: 42 minutes.
2- Hayden Cramer and Agustin Lombardi same out with a solid effort, putting returns deep in the court and serving well in the I-formation. They rolled easily to a 6-1 set. Time of the match: 25 minutes. Time of the match: 25 minutes
3- Both UND players served well and Connor Finerty and Alex Clerihew were unable to put enough returns back in play deep in the court losing 6-3. Time of the match: 27 minutes
Singles Breakdown:
1- After winning the first set 6-1, Connor Finerty found himself in a battle for the second against UND redshirt-junior Dustin Britton. Britton got the break of serve on a Finerty double-fault for 6-4. In the third, Finerty earned an early break to lead 2-1 but it did not last long and Britton got it back the very next game. Finerty proved to be the stronger of the two players, edging out the third set 6-3. Time of the match: 1 hour, 40 minutes.
2- Kyle Pease looked like he was going to win the first set easily, leading 5-2 but freshman Alex Mailes showed resolve to get the score line back to 5-4 before Pease was able to serve it out for 6-4. In the second, Pease continued to be the more patient player, winning 6-3. Time of the match: 1 hour 20 minutes.
3- Trailing 3-2 in the first set, Hayden Cramer willed himself back to the lead and the first set 6-4. The momentum shifted in the second and UND junior Ty Misialek capitalized for a 6-2 set.
