@UNCO_MensTennis Drops First Match of Spring 6-1
USAFA -- The Bears men's tennis team got off to a good start winning two of three doubles matches, but were ultimately overpowered in a series of close, two set singles matches, leading to a final score of Air Force defeating Northern Colorado 6-1. Interim head coach Ben Gendron had praise for his team's effort on the road against a difficult opponent.
"I like our guys effort level from the beginning. They competed hard against Air Force and our hours of practice really showed in the way the match played out."
Gendron had good reason to be optimistic for the remaining spring schedule for the Bears. Although UNC failed to win a singles match against Air Force, four of the six matches were reasonably close and no one on the team lost a set without earning at least two games.

Doubles Breakdown-
1- Number one doubles, featuring UNC's Kyle Pease and Cassell King was the last doubles match to finish and also the closest. Pease and King got a break of serve to go up 2-1 but were unable to consolidate in and the match stayed on serve to 6-5. A large number of rallies in the match ended with all four players at the net, where their reaction times to get the ball back were often tested. After Air Force held at love to keep the match on serve 6-6, a tiebreaker was necessary to determine the crucial team doubles point since number 2 and 3 doubles had split their results. King and Pease won the tiebreak 7-5 capped by an unreturned first serve off the racket of Pease on the final point. Match Time: 45 minutes.
2- At number two doubles the duo of Hayden Cramer and Alex Vakoufsis got their first break of serve at 1-1 against Air Force's Lucas Fumagalli and Luke Sanderson. They consolidated the break and gained more ground thanks to a series of solid forehand volley winners off the racket of Vakouftsis. The Bears were helped by a strong forehand and good first serve percentage by Cramer and they cruised to a 6-1 victory. Match time: 31 minutes.
3- At number three doubles, Connor Finerty and Alex Clerihew jumped out to a 3-0 lead against Air Force's Matthew Ghering and Max Olsen. Air Force was a bit sloppy at the net in the first three games and UNC capitalized by hitting groundstrokes from the baseline right at the duo on multiple occasions. Air Force battled back to level the match and then take the lead 4-3 on a break of serve. At 5-4, Finerty put 4 straight first serves in play to seal the game and the win 6-4.Match time: 35 minutes.
Singles Breakdown-
1- Pease struggled early extending rallies in the first five games of the first set putting him down 4-1. Pease then settled down and became more successful in long rallies and took a break back for 4-2 but eventually dropped the set 6-4 in 38 minutes. Throughout the match, Pease used the forehand from the middle of the court well, producing numerous winners from that position. Fumagalli served for the match at 5-4 but was unable to finish. He got another chance at 6-5 and made no mistake, winning 6-4, 7-5. Match time 1 hour, 19 minutes.
2- After dropping the first set 6-3 in 32 minutes, Vakouftsis used his efficient footwork to get off to a good start serving in the second set. They stayed on serve until Perez got the break at 4-4 and closed out the match 6-4 in the second set. Match time: 1 hour 13 minutes.
3- Max Olsen and Connor Finerty's number 3 singles match featured an exceptional blend of power from the baseline and touch primarily on approach of the net. Olsen won the first set 6-4 in 32 minutes, finishing on a deep forehand volley after an extended rally. Down 5-2, 40-30 in the second set, Finerty saved match point and eventually get the break for 3-5. Serving for the match at 5-4, Olsen got a second match point 40-30 after a backhand error from Finerty and closed out the match with a serve and volley. Match time: 1 hour, 12 minutes.
4- Sanderson, Lombardi. Lombardi struggled at times to get himself inside the baseline as both players preferred to do battle from the baseline. Sanderson continued to put pressure on after winning the first set 6-2 in 29 minutes keeping the ball deep, especially off the forehand wing. Final score 6-2, 6-2 Sanderson. Match time: 1 hour, 2 minutes.
5- Tadhg Collins used an early lead to hold on for the first set 6-4 against UNC's Hayden Cramer. Cramer got on the board for 1-4 in the second set, but eventually lost the match 6-4, 6-2.
6- Air Force's Mack Galvin used his first serve to win a lot of points against UNC's Cassell King. Galvin served at 5-4 to take the first set 6-4. The second set featured a large number of backhand-to-backhand rallies. Galvin prevailed in the match 6-4, 6-2
