Chattanooga, Tenn. – It has been a thrilling year for Northern Colorado thus far, and it continued on Monday as the Bears placed two wrestlers at the Southern Scuffle for the first time in program history. Keilan Torres [165] placed sixth, while Dylan Gabel [184] placed eighth.
As a team, the Bears ended up in 15th place with 29.5 points, which marks the highest finish at the Southern Scuffle for Northern Colorado.
Three Bears wrestled in the second day of the tournament, with Timmy Box [141] being the third to compete on the day. Box lost his match to place to Tristan Moran of Oklahoma State 12-4.
Torres capped off a great weekend of wrestling and set multiple records in the process. For starters, Torres is the first wrestler in Northern Colorado history to reach the semifinals of the Southern Scuffle, in addition to becoming the highest placer with his 6th place finish.
In the semifinals, Torres squared off against former teammate, Chandler Rogers of Oklahoma State University. Rogers advanced with a fall in 4:21, which sent Torres to the consolation semifinals.
The consolation semifinals featured Torres' second overtime match of the tournament, but yielded a different result than the first time. Torres faced No. 4 seed Nick Wanzek of University of Minnesota. In a barnburner of a match, Wanzek came away triumphant by securing a takedown in the overtime period to win 9-7.
In the fifth/sixth place match, Torres faced Cole Walter of Lehigh University and lost 5-2, to capture a sixth place finish.
The first period went scoreless, as both wrestlers were unable to get any sort of offense going. Torres chose bottom to start the second and escaped within 17 seconds, giving Torres a 1-0 lead. The third period began with Walters choosing bottom, and quickly reversed Torres, taking a 2-1 advantage. Torres was able to escape, bringing the score to 2-2, but Walters accrued 1:06 of riding time. Fighting hard to get a takedown, Torres tried a last ditch effort throw attempt on Walters, and gave up another takedown, to drop the match 5-2.
Dylan Gabel competed hard as well, especially given the fact this is his first career appearance at the Southern Scuffle.
In the match to advance to the medal rounds, Gabel wrestled against Alex DeCiantis of Drexel University. Gabel controlled the tempo of the bout, refusing to let DeCiantis score and won 2-0, advancing to the consolation of four round.
In the consolation of four round, Gabel was pitted against Bryce Carr of University of Tennessee Chattanooga. Gabel was unable to score during the match, and lost 4-0.
In the seventh/eighth place match, Gabel faced No. 4 seed Chip Ness of University of North Carolina.
The first period was scoreless, as Gabel displayed some excellent shot defense to ward off Ness. The second period Ness had choice, and started on bottom. Gabel rode tough, but Ness managed to escape and takedown Gabel, bringing the score to 3-0. Gabel escaped before the period's end, and entered the third period trailing 3-1.
In the final period, Gabel had choice and took bottom. Gabel escaped with about a minute left, and got to work trying to get a takedown. Gabel fired off a flurry of shots, which ensued with multiple scrambles between Ness and Gabel. Ultimately, Gabel could not get a takedown, and lost 3–2.
In Their Words
Head Coach Troy Nickerson: "Last year Trent Noon was the first wrestler in program history to place at the Southern Scuffle. This year we came away with two placers, with Keilan Torres getting 6th place and Dylan Gabel getting 8th. We are making the right steps toward becoming a top 25 program in the country, but we still have more work to do in our accomplishing our goals as a team. We will now focus our attention towards the Big 12 Dual Season, starting with North Dakota and South Dakota State this upcoming weekend."
Northern Colorado will travel to North Dakota and South Dakota State for duals this upcoming weekend. The Bears will wrestle against North Dakota State on Friday January 6th and South Dakota State January 8th.
