Northern Colorado fell to Seattle 8-1 Sunday
SEATTLE – A big fourth inning from Seattle University was all it took for the team to finish off its three-game sweep of Northern Colorado Sunday afternoon. The Bears fell to the Redhawks 8-1.
How it Happened
Similar to the first two games, Seattle scored first with a run in each the second and third inning to go up 2-0 for UNC.
The fourth inning is when SU put a crooked number up, six runs to be exact, and put the game out of reach. The big rally started when Brock Carpenter tripled to right center to leadoff the inning.
Seattle's inning would continue by having only one out recorded, via a sacrifice in the following seven batter as they scored four more runs during that time span. By the time the inning ended the Redhawks had scored six runs on four hits and no errors to be up 8-0.
Northern Colorado's lone run of the game came in the fifth inning off a Payton Tapia leadoff home run.
Game Changing Moment
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth UNC had runners on the corners with one out and the heart of the line-up coming up. The Bears were unable to capitalize with a strikeout and fielder's choice to end the inning leaving the runners stranded. Seattle would proceed to hang a six spot on Northern Colorado in the bottom half of the inning.
Players of the Game
Northern Colorado: Although his stat line may not be the most impressive, Justin Mulvaney's two and two-thirds innings pitched were key for UNC in helping save their bullpen. He came in during the fourth inning to record the final two outs and ended up going two more innings allowing no runs on three hits while walking one and striking out two SU hitters.
Seattle: Two-hole hitter Dalton Hurd was a big part of the Redhawks offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Two of his three hits were doubles.
Notables
- This is the third straight series for UNC that has been a sweep. The previous two the Bears were on the positive side, sweeping North Dakota on the road and Grand Canyon at home.
- The Bears are still seeking that berth to the WAC Tournament with one weekend to go. UNC needs just one win to clinch a spot in the Tournament in Mesa, Arizona.
- No Northern Colorado hitter recorded multiple hits on Sunday. As a team they combined for seven hits overall.
What's Next?
UNC will stay in the Pacific Northwest for an extra day as they take on nationally ranked Washington tomorrow night. The Bears and Huskies will faceoff at 6 pm.
