Air Force snapped UNC's win streak with a 9-5 decision Tuesday
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Northern Colorado baseball saw its seven-game win streak end on Tuesday afternoon at the hands of in-state rival Air Force 9-5.
How it Happened
Rob Cashel doubled to RC to leadoff the game, and was moved over on a Dean Lawson sacrifice bunt and Griffin Mueller sac fly to score him for a 1-0 lead after the top of the first.
Air Force's Tyler Jones tied the game at one with a solo home in the bottom of the first.
In the second inning the Falcons scored three runs to go up 4-1. The team started the inning off with a hit from four of its first five batters.
Lawson continued his hot hitting streak in the third with a single to start the inning. He was brought home by Muller with a double to right center.
Air Force would respond with three more runs to go up 7-2 after four innings.
Northern Colorado would try and chip away at the Falcons' lead though, scoring a run in the sixth, seventh and eighth inning.
Despite the efforts to make a comeback, the Bears were unable to hold Air Force off the scoreboard in the late innings as they would put insurance runs on in the seventh and eighth inning.
Game Changing Moment
In the ninth inning, Northern Colorado loaded the bases with three straight walks by Corey Nakakura, Joe Love and Ryan Yamane with no outs, trailing by four.. Both Jacob Ek and Jake Garcia would strike out in the proceeding at-bats, before Dan Reese grounded out to short to end the game.
Players of the Game
Northern Colorado: Dean Lawson continues to be on fire in the batter's box for the Bears. Tuesday, he went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate to increase his season average to .389. He had three singles and a double, while scoring twice and driving in another run.
Air Force: Left fielder Tyler Jones entered Tuesday's game with 14 home runs, and left it with 16. Jones two hits on the day were both solo home runs to book end the Falcons' scoring for the day.
Notable
- The loss ends UNC's seven game win streak. All seven wins came in WAC play, helping the team improve its standings in the conference. It was the team's longest win streak since 2013 when they won nine straight.
- The top duo of Rob Cashel and Dean Lawson did plenty of work for the team, combining to go 5-for-8 scoring four of the teams runs.
- Northern Colorado left plenty of chances go to waste. The Bears stranded 13 runners, including leaving the bases loaded in the seventh and ninth.
- Payton Tapia and Griffin Mueller also had good days for UNC at the plate as well. Tapia was 2-for-2 with a walk, while Muller went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
What's Next?
The Bears continue their road trip when they head to Seattle for a three-game WAC series against Seattle U. The Redhawks are the top team in the WAC. First pitch for Friday's game is set for 6 pm MT.
