@BearsSoftball Splits Doubleheader at North Dakota
4/15/2016 7:49:00 PM | Softball
The Bears won the first game of the series and picked up their first Big Sky win of the season 6-4, but dropped the second half of the twin bill 5-4.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Northern Colorado (5-28, 1-10 Big Sky) picked up its first conference win of the season after splitting a doubleheader with North Dakota (14-26, 2-8 Big Sky) on Friday. UNC claimed the first day of the game 6-4, but fell to the Fighting Hawks on a walk off single in game two, 5-4.
Game 1:
Northern Colorado used all three phases of the game to earn a 6-4 win over North Dakota in the first half of the twin bill and pick up its first Big Sky win of the season.
Jayme Reddacliff (5-13) worked a no hitter for three innings before the Bears offense provided some support.
UNC posted a two-spot in the top half of the fourth thanks to an RBI double to left from Lauren Paige, the first of three RBIs she had in the game. Madi Schmidt came home for the Bears after working a single to lead off the inning.
With runners on, a wild pitch from the Fight Hawks proved costly scoring Kaley Garcia from third after she reached on a fielder's choice.
North Dakota answered with on run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Bears lead to one, 2-1 heading into the fifth.
UNC was good for two runs in both the sixth and seventh to put some space between them and the Fighting Hawks.
Both Rachel Johnson and Adeline Coldiron notched RBIs in the sixth, and a two-run shot from Paige in the top of seven bulked the lead to 6-1.
UND didn't go quietly, making Northern Colorado earn the win. The Fighting Hawks posted three runs in their last at bat and had the bases loaded with two outs with the winning run at first, but Reddacliff got North Dakota to ground out to third to end the game.
Reddacliff had her best outing of the season in terms of strikeouts. She fanned four in the win and allowed four runs on six hits and walked three. It was her first W since March 19, getting the win in extra innings at Utah State.
Game Changer:
Jayme Reddacliff sent out a statement early in the game that she was there to deal. Reddacliff worked a no hitter into the fourth inning and had only been hit twice until the seventh.
Key Stat:
Designated player Lauren Paige was abusive at the plate in game one. Paige went 2-3 with three RBI and two runs, including a two-run home run and a double. She also walked once.
In Coach Easley's Words:
"It was great to get the first win of the series. Jayme Reddacliff and Kelli Kleis both threw well for us today and we were able to control the momentum for most of the day. Lauren Paige came up with some big hits for us which was great to see from our designated player spot. We are ready to come out tomorrow to compete for the series win."
Game 2:
In game two UNC looked poised for its second win of the day holding a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. After loading the bases, North Dakota walked off on a single up the middle that cleared the bases. After the game-tying runner and the Bears' catcher had a collision that kept the ball in play, the winning run came across to hand the team a 5-4 loss.
UND jumped out to an early 2-0 llead with a home run in the bottom of the second inning, and then scored again in the bottom of the fourth on a single.
The Bears were held off the scoreboard until the top of the fifth, but took the lead off of a three-run bomb from Lauren Paige, her second home run of the series to make it 3-2.
UNC tacked on one more run for good measure in the top of seven off a Sarah Fitzherbert RBI single to bring it to 4-2.
Down to the final three outs of the game, UND once again rallied, scoring three runs with a walk off single to steal the game from Northern Colorado 5-4.
Jayme Reddacliff started game two as well, going 2.2 innings giving up just one run on one hit, while walking two.
Kelli Kleis (0-10) relieved Reddacliff, throwing the final 4.0 innings of the game. Kleis gave up four runs on five hits and walked three.
Game Changer:
Lauren Paige hit her second home run of the series bringing in three runs to give UNC a 3-2 lead with two innings to play.
Key Stat:
Sarah Fitzherbert continued her hit streak to 11 games going 2-4 with a RBI and a run in the loss.
Northern Colorado will go for the series win on Saturday, April 16 against UND with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
