@BearsSoftball Missing One Big Hit in Loss to North Dakota
4/16/2016 2:42:00 PM | Softball
UNC stranded a season-high 12 runners in the 7-1 loss on Saturday.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Northern Colorado (5-29, 1-11 Big Sky) had no trouble at the plate on Saturday, recording nine hits and earning three walks. Unfortunately, the Bears couldn't turn those hits into runs, falling to North Dakota (15-26, 3-7 Big Sky) 7-1 in the series finale.
Game 3:
UNC got rolling as soon as the game did, loading the bases in the top of the first off singles from second baseman Sarah Fitzherbert and designated player, Lauren Paige. Kaley Garcia earned the first walk of the day to put a Bear on every base, but first basemen Rachel Johnson went down on strikes to strand three.
UND plated two in its first appearance at bat and held the two-run lead until the fourth inning.
In the bottom half of the fourth the Fight Hawks pushed across four more runs to extend their advantage over Northern Colorado, 6-0.
The Bears were held scoreless until the sixth inning when shortstop Erica Dick brought in the team's lone run of the game on a single to left center. The hit brought home Kenzie Kudrna who pitch ran for Johnson. Johnson got on via a walk to start the inning.
Down to its final three outs, UNC was still able to get runners into scoring position, but were couldn't bring them home, stranding two on base to end the game.
Northern Colorado used two different pitchers in the defeat. Jayme Reddacliff (5-14) started in the circle and pitched 3.1 innings. Reddacliff allowed six runs (four earned) on nine hits. She struck out three and walked two.
Paige tossed the final 2.2 innings in relief. Paige gave up one run on two hits in the nine batters she faced.
Game Changer:
The Bears stranded 12 runners on bases in the six-run loss. The most the team has left on so far this season.
Key Stat:
Catcher Ari Samaniego had a strong day at the plate. The freshman went 3-4 in the seven-hole. All three of her hits were singles.
In Coach Easley's Words:
"It's certainly not where we wanted, or expected to be in conference, but we have three more weeks left to make something happen. Luckily, we get two of those three weeks at home. Hopefully we can defend our home field and fight our tails off to keep improving every time we step out on the field."
The softball team will return to Greeley to begin an eight-game home stand beginning with doubleheader against Metro State on April 19. Games are slated for 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. at the Butler-Hancock Softball Field.
