South Dakota State scored seven runs in the seventh and eighth inning to defeat UNC 11-3
How it Happened
Tyler Yamaguchi led the 3rd off with a double down the first base line that just clipped the chalk. He then scored when Ryan Yamane hit a single towards first to score the first run of the game.
Yamane came around to score later in the inning on a passed ball, after advancing to third
on Cole Maltese's single.
SDSU came back to cut the lead to one with a two out rally in the fourth.
A pair of walks to start the fifth led to a three run inning for the Jacks to take the lead for good at 4-2. They then added on seven more runs over the seventh and either to make it 11-2.
Dan Reese would try and start a UNC rally in the 9th with a lead-off home run, his first of the year.
Players of the Game
UNC: Brett Minnick continued his sold weekend for the team, earning a walk in all three of his plate appearances. That follows up his 3-for-3 day with another walk as well.
SDSU: South Dakota State's Landon Busch earned the win with a solid relief effort. He shut down UNC's offense with 4.0 solid innings allowing no hits or runs, striking out four and walking just one.
Stats of the Game
- Ryan Yamane tied the program record in walks with 121 when he drew it in the first inning. He tied Jeff Cheek (1972-76) for the record.
- For the second straight game, UNC struck out 10 plus batters. Alex Werbach led the team with four of their 10.
- While the Bears did a good job fanning SDSU hitters, when they were able to work the count, they were able to work eight walks in the game. Many of those walks would come back to hurt them.
What's Next?
The Bears and Jacks will close out their three game series on Sunday. Left handed pitcher Nick Tanner is scheduled to make the first pitch at noon.
