Northern Colorado baseball walked off against South Dakota State Sunday afternoon 7-6
GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado once again avoided a weekend sweep on Sunday with a thrilling walk-off win over South Dakota State. The Bears defeated the Jackrabbits 7-6 to avoid the sweep and send the home fans home happy.
How It Happened
South Dakota State took an early 2-0 lead with a run in the second and another in the third, before UNC tied it up in the bottom of the fourth. The teams remained tied until an offensive explosion over the final three innings.
In the top of the seventh, SDSU constructed a two out rally to take a 5-2 lead over the Bears.
UNC showed it would not back down though, getting a leadoff single from freshman Griffin Mueller. The inning continued with the top of the order loading the bases and producing just one out, bringing up hot hitting Dan Reese.
The Jacks pitcher Chris Halbur balked during the at bat to bring home Kiefer Glau who pitch ran for Mueller. Reese then hit a 2-2 RBI double to left field to pull the Bears within one. Corey Nakakura brought home the game tying run with a ground out to second base, but Northern Colorado wasn't done yet.
The day's starting pitcher and designated hitter Nick Tanner, provided the go ahead run with a single hit sharply to center field to put UNC up 6-5 through seven.
In the eighth, SDSU once again tied the game at six off a towering home run over the right field fence from catcher Luke Ringhofer.
The teams entered the ninth tied at six when senior lefty Allen Cook struck out the side to fire up the Bears going to the bottom half.
Ryan Yamane startes the inning off, reaching on an error by the first basemen and was pitch ran for by Dean Lawson. He moved into scoring position after a well-executed sacrifice bunt from Jacob Ek. Lawson was just 90 feet away from ending the game on a Cole Maltese fly ball out.
After SDSU intentionally walked Reese to put runners on the corner. Nakakura provided the game-winning hit, sneaking a hard hit grounder past the diving first basemen on the pay-off pitch of the at-bat to secure the win.
Players of the Game
UNC: Freshman Corey Nakakura took over first base for UNC on Sunday and not only delivered the game winning hit, but was constantly on the base paths all day. He finished the
game 3-for-4 while also working a walk. Nakakura drove in two runs and scored once himself.
SDSU: Luke Ringhofer was 3-for-4 on the day, just like Nakukura, providing UNC with troubles all day. His run and RBI both came on his eighth inning home run.

What They Said
"As we saw today there are a lot of bright spots on this team. As long we keep building off those we have a lot of good things to offer moving forward." – Dan Reese
"With two outs I just wanted to just square something up and do what I can. I wasn't worried about the situation I just wanted to do what I could to be successful and let the rest take care of itself." – Corey Nakakura
"It's good to take the Sunday games. We will have to do that all year long. Nick Tanner got it started for us againtoday doing a good job on the mound. Our task now is to take a series which we have not done yet. By taking a series now we will know we will be able to do that in the WAC as well." – Head coach Carl Iwasaki
