UNC dropped games one and two of their three-game series against the Shockers on Saturday
WICHITA, Kans. – Northern Colorado played two of their three games against the Wichita State Shockers on Saturday, falling in both games 10-1 and 8-0, respectively. The Bears are now 3-15 on the season.
GAME 1: Northern Colorado 1, Wichita State 10
Northern Colorado had one run and five hits in their first game of the day against the Shockers, including two hits from freshman Madi Schmidt.
UNC had two hits in the second inning, with Adeline Coldiron singling to right field in the third at-bat of the inning. Rachel Johnson followed suit, singling to left field next, advancing Coldiron to second. Unfortunately, the third out of the inning would strand the two on base.
Schmidt picked up her first hit of the game at the top of the third, singling to left field. A sacrifice bunt by Cheyenne Talmadge would advance Schmidt to second, leaving UNC with two outs in the inning. Erica Dick singled in the next at-bat, advancing to second on the throw and advancing to third on a throwing error by the centerfielder. The play would bring Schmidt in for the lone Bear run of the day.
"Erica had a good hit and RBI in game one as a spark for our offense," head coach Shana Easley said. "Unfortunately, we were unable to capitalize when runners were on base during the rest of the game."
The freshman's second hit came in the fifth and final inning, but she would be stranded on second, after advancing on a wild pitch, following the third strike for UNC.
Kelli Kleis took the loss, pitching all four innings for the Bear squad. She picked up two strikeouts during the game, bringing her season total to 15.
GAME 2: Northern Colorado 0, Wichita State 8
The Bears picked up another five hits in the second game of the day's double header, but were unable to capitalize for any runs.
Kenzie Kudrna picked up the first hit of the game for UNC in the third, singling to right field. She would be out at second on the next play, however, on a fielder's choice.
In the second at-bat of the fourth inning, Dick would single to right field, and she would advance to third after a single by Lauren Paige in the next at-bat. Dick would be the third out of the inning, however, with a throw from the right fielder to the catcher.
Freshman Ari Samaniego singled to left center in the fifth, advancing to second following a single to left field by Kaley Garcia. A double play in the next at-bat, however, would close out the inning.
Jayme Reddacliff pitched the first 4.1 innings of the game for UNC, picking up two strikeouts. Valerie Vidal would close out the game, picking up another strikeout in the final inning.
"Jayme threw well and kept the hitters off balance through the fourth inning. We just have to continue to work on staying focused in the late innings to generate some runs of our own."
Northern Colorado is right back on the field on Sunday morning to close out the three-game series against the Shockers. The Bears will be back in Greeley next Wednesday, March 16, for a matchup against the Colorado State Rams.
