3/16/2016 6:35:00 PM | Softball
The Bears fell to the Rams on Wednesday, 14-9
The Bears picked up three runs in the bottom of the first to set their offensive lead in motion, starting with a single to left center by lead-off batter Madi Schmidt. Schmidt advanced with a steal, and a single to right field by Erica Dick moved Schmidt to third.
Dick also stole second, and an error by the second baseman put freshman Ari Samaniego on first and brought in both Schmidt and Dick. A walk for Rachel Johnson moved Samaniego to second, and a double by Kaley Garcia would bring in the third run of the inning. A ground-out in the next at-bat would strand two on base, but left the Bears with a 3-1 lead.
Samaniego scored again in the third inning, following a single to shortstop to start the bottom of the inning. She'd advance to third after a sacrifice and a wild pitch, and a ground-out by Garcia brought in the RBI, moving the score up to 4-1.
Another three runs were brought in by the Bears in the bottom of the fifth, kicked off with a single to center field by Lauren Paige.
Johnson doubled to left center, advancing pinch-runner Kenzi Kudrna to third. Garcia shot another double to center, bringing both Johnson and Kudrna in to make it 6-2, Bears. Garcia advanced to second after a ground-out by Sarah Fitzherbert, and a single by Cheyenne Talmadge plated the third run of the inning.
Despite being down by five runs, the Colorado State Rams rallied in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead. The Rams took on all three UNC pitchers throughout the half-inning, scoring 10 runs on seven hits, with one error and five walks.
Adeline Coldiron tacked on another run for UNC in the sixth, walking to first and advancing on a passed ball. Dick smoked a triple in the next at-bat, bringing Coldiron in to make it UNC 9, CSU 12.
Pitching duties moved between three UNC players, with Jayme Reddacliff making the start. Reddacliff pitched a total of 5.2 innings, picking up one strikeout, but giving up nine runs. Kelli Kleis faced three batters as well, ultimately taking the loss, but it would be Lauren Paige who closed out the game, pitching 1.1 innings total. Paige picked up two strikeouts throughout the 1.1 innings.
UNC will head out to Logan, Utah next for a three-game series against Utah State, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 19 (12:00pm; 2:30pm).
