UNC fell short against Texas Southern, but rallied for the win over Incarnate Word
Â
"I was much happier with our offensive production today," head coach Shana Easley said. "We played more like the team I know we are capable of being, and we are excited to play Lamar again tomorrow. We're really going to be building off of the positive adjustments we made today in our rematch against them."
Â
GAME 1: Northern Colorado 9, Texas Southern 10
Â
In the third game of the tournament, the Bears came out fighting, picking up two runs in the first inning to take an early lead, and tacking on another five before the final inning. They'd hold on to their lead until the top of the seventh, but couldn't recover after giving up four runs, ending the game down 10-9.
Â
UNC did have a season-high 14 hits throughout the game, with Lauren Paige leading the way with three. Erica Dick, Kenzi Kudrna, Madi Schmidt, and Kaley Garcia all picked up two each, with another five Bears adding on hits of their own.
Â
The fifth inning was the biggest outing for Northern Colorado, with Madi Schmidt, Erica Dick and Lauren Paige all scoring runs. Schmidt reached first on an error by the left fielder, and advanced to second on the play. Dick would single down the right field line to bring Schmidt in, and a huge home run by Paige (her second of the game) would score runs two and three.
Â
Chandler Elsner took the loss after pitching 6.1 innings for the Bears. She struck out two batters before Valerie Vidal relieved her for the remaining two outs of the seventh inning.
Â
GAME 2: Northern Colorado 6, University of The Incarnate Word 2
Â
Despite taking a narrow loss in the morning, the afternoon proved to be much more successful for the Bears. They earned 12 hits throughout the game, with six runs, and only allowed two runs from their opposition, both in the seventh inning.
Â
In the fourth, Erica Dick picked up the third home run for the team on the day, slugging the ball straight out of right center for the lone hit and run of the inning.
Â
The fifth inning was also the biggest for the Bears in their second game of the day, with half of their runs occurring within. Sarah Fitzherbert singled to left field in the second at-bat in the inning, and would advance to second with Kudrna grounding out to third base. A single by Cheyenne Talmadge would also advance Fitzherbert to third, and a double by freshman Madi Schmidt along with an error by the center field-woman would bring all three runners in to give the Bears a 4-0 lead.
Â
Jayme Reddacliff pitched all seven innings for UNC to earn the win, adding another five strikeouts to her season total (now 23) and bringing her career total to over 100 strikeouts in less than three seasons.
