Softball Closes Out Cardinals Classic Against Lamar

UNC finished 1-4 at the three-day tournament

BEAUMONT, Texas - UNC Softball closed out the Cardinal Classic on Sunday morning, falling to Lamar, 6-3.

"There were certainly improvements from day one to day three of this tournament," head coach Shana Easley said. "But we still have several things to work on at practice starting this coming week."

Northern Colorado had seven hits throughout the game, with runs scored by Madi Schmidt, Alex Sonoqui, and Kaley Garcia.

Sonoqui, a freshman, reached in the second inning on a fielder's choice, and she advanced to second after a single up the middle by Garcia. Kaley Kudrna's single to shortstop filled the bases for the Bears, and a single for Schmidt brought Sonoqui in. Garcia also scored after an error by the second baseman, but Kudrna and Schmidt was stranded at the end of the inning.

The third UNC run came in the fifth inning, after Schmidt reached on a fielder's choice, advancing to second on an error by the pitcher. A passed ball sent Schmidt to third, and Erica Dick brought her in for the run with an RBI single to center field.

Jayme Reddacliff took the loss, pitching the first 3.2 innings, picking up two strikeouts before being relieved by Kelli Kleis in the remaining 2.1 innings. Kleis also earned one strikeout against 10 total batters.

"Our team competed better overall which is very important. The break we have now will be great since we have had a chance to see our younger players compete in their first collegiate games. Now we can focus on keying in on the adjustments we can make for them and the team as a whole."

Overall in the tournament, the Bears went 1-4, with their lone win coming over Incarnate Word on Saturday evening, 6-2.

UNC has the rest of the month off, but will return to the field on March 1st when they take on the Colorado State Rams in Fort Collins.
