Scouting Idaho State
Idaho State was one of four teams to open Big Sky play last weekend, falling to rival Weber State 61-46 last Saturday.
The Bengals are one of the top rebounding team's in the conference, outrebounding their opponents by 5.7 points a game.
ISU has a trio of players averaging double figures this season, led by All-Big Sky preseason player Apiphany Woods 13.7 a game. She also averaging 4.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists.
The other two Idaho State players scoring over 10 points a game are Anna Policiccho (13.6) and Brook Blair (12.8).
Policiccho is tied for the team lead in rebounds, as well grabbing 6.3 a game with Freya Newton.
Last season ISU finished eighth in the conference and gave eventual conference tournament champion Montana a run for their money. This season they are picked seventh by the coaches and fifth by the media.
Last Time Against the Bengals
Idaho State used a strong shooting effort to defeat the Bears last season 70-61. The Bengals shot 50.0 percent in the first half of the game to build a 12 point lead by half.
UNC was unable to come back from the deficit even behind the strong efforts from Stephanie Lee who scored 25 points and grabbed six rebounds.
ISU had four players finish in double figures scoring during the game, led by the 19 from Apiphany Woods.
Last Time Out
UNC struggled shooting against Idaho going only 37.0 percent from the field compared to 43.4 percent from UI. The Vandals used 12 3-pointers and a plus 12 mark on the boards to defeat the Bears 66-56. Kourteney Zadina continued her strong play over the last few games, leading UNC with 19 points.
Against the Big Sky
UNC is 94-118 all-time against Big Sky opponents. Since joining the conference in the 2006-07 season, the Bears are 84-82 all-time. Last season the Bears went 12-6 in the conference to finish third.
On This Date
Northern Colorado has played on the 7th 10 times and got 7-3 on the date. Four of the seven victories have come at home, including the most recent on game in 2011 when they defeated Sacramento State 68-58.
Month of January
Northern Colorado is just a bit below .500 in the first month of a new year. The Bears have accumulated a 172-177 mark in January. Under current head coach Kamie Ethridge the team is 5-5.
Kiwi Stuffing the Stat Sheet
Kianna Williams has taken off in her sophomore season doing it all for the Bears. She ranks fourth on the team in scoring (8.5 ppg), second in assists (2.6 apg), tied for first in rebounds (4.3 rpg) and first in steals (2.1 spg).
Swaggy Z Heating Up
Kourteney "Swaggy Z" Zadina has been heating up as the temperatures outside continue to drop. Zadina has scored in double figures in six of those seven games, averaging 13.9 ppg. She has been shooting at a clip of 44.9 percent from the field and 39.5 percent from downtown.
70 is the Mark
Coach Ethridge always preaches to her team that if they score 70 points they are in a good position to win. That has held true this season with UNC scoring at least 70 points in four of its five wins. The Denver game the team scored 60 points, but still got the win.
Shooting Woes
UNC has hit a bit of a cold spell recently struggling to see the ball go through the basket. Over the past three games the team is shooting 36.7 percent from the field and 24.4 percent from beyond the arc.
From Downtown
The Bears have been feeling it from behind the arc this season averaging 8.8 made threes a game. That ranks for 15th best in the nation, but only third best in the Big Sky. Both Idaho (4th) and Sacramento State (1st) are ahead of UNC.
Stuck Like Glue
After the game against South Dakota State, Kamie Ethridge called Savannah Scott, "the glue that keeps the team together." Scott has had a strong start to her sophomore season. She has stuffed the stat sheet with her play averaging 9.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals a game.
Valuing the Ball
Once again this year UNC is valuing the rock, and forcing teams into turnovers. They rank 13th in the country and first in the Big Sky with a 1.32 assist-turnover ratio.
Youth is Served
With the graduation of four key seniors from last year, youth will definitely be a big part of the team this season. So far, 51.1 percent of the team's scoring is coming from underclassmen and 43.2 percent of the rebounds.
RPI Report
UNC is ranked 193 as of 1/5, sixth best in the Big Sky. Idaho State is the highest at 79.
What's On Deck?
Northern Colorado returns to the road next week taking on the tough Montana trip. Last season UNC became the first team since 2012 to sweep the road trip.
