Northern Colorado Soccer beat the Drake Bulldogs 2-1 as time expired in 2OT
GREELEY, Colo. - The UNC Bears added another win to their season after a 2-1 victory over the Drake Bulldogs. The game-winning goal came via Sydney Schroeder with barely a second left on the clock in double-overtime.
The Bulldogs came out quickly in their first visit to Jackson Field, taking three shots within the first five minutes of the game. The Bears did not respond until the 10th minute, but then proceeded to take 11 shots to Drake's seven in the half.
Northern Colorado earned the first goal of the game after a Drake soccer player knocked the ball into their own goal following a corner kick by Rebecca Lancia. The Bears would remain in the lead at 1-0 going into the half.
Heading into the second period, Drake yet again took a shot on goal within the first minute of play, but senior goalkeeper Kaitlin Ruff proved yet again to be too quick, getting the save.
The Bears' defense kept their opponents from scoring until the 76th minute, when Rebecca Rogers managed to get one in the goal for Drake. Time expired in regulation with the teams tied 1-1, sending them into the first of two overtime periods.Â
UNC came close to scoring on two corner kicks in the first overtime period, the first going wide right and the second narrowly saved by the Bulldog goalkeeper. The second period also brought the Bear corner kick total for the game up to a season-high number at eight.
The teams went on to play nearly a full second overtime period after a scoreless first, each adding shots, both kicked high.
In the last few seconds of the period, Lancia managed to make a last-ditch attempt at a shot on goal, knocking the ball straight to Bear midfielder Paige Morris. Morris, surrounded by defenders at the entrance of the Bulldog goal, headed the ball to Sydney Schroeder, who pushed the ball into the goal just before time expired on the clock ending the game at 2-1 in favor of UNC.
Overall, Northern Colorado outshot Drake by nearly double, with 29 shots, seven on goal, compared to 15 shots, six on goal.Â
This is the first time the Bears have defeated the Bulldogs, bringing the series to 1-2-1. The last meeting between the two teams was in 2012 at Drake, where Drake took the match 1-0. The only other time Drake has played at Jackson Field resulted in a 1-1 tie.
Starting the season at 4-1-0 with a four game winning-streak, the 2015 Bears team hold the longest winning streak since the 2002 squad, and hope to only add on to the run.
You can catch the Bears back in action this Sunday, September 6, at 12:00 p.m. MT, when they face the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights. This will be their second meeting ever - the first meeting in 2010 resulting in a 4-0 win for UNC at the Air Force Fall Classic.
