Women's soccer winning streak ends after 2-0 loss
GREELEY, Colo. – Sunday afternoon, Northern Colorado Soccer fell to the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights 2-0 to end their four-game winning streak. The Bears outshot the Knights 15-12, but were unable to capitalize on any shots.
The first half got underway fairly quickly, with a UNC corner kick occuring after only one minute of play. The Knights had a flurry of shots, but Bear goalkeeper Madeline Burdick was too quick, picking up two saves.
Both teams had seven shots within the first period, but the game remained scoreless for the entire 45 minutes, sending the game into halftime at 0-0.
Another minute-in corner kick, this time for the Knights, got things going in the second half. A foul on the Bears immediately following the corner kick resulted in a penalty kick attempt for Fairleigh Dickinson. Rachel Hoekstra for the Knights took the shot, sending it past Burdick and into the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Four minutes later, Hoekstra sent another ball into the goal, furthering the Knight lead to 2-0. The Bears fought back, making multiple attempts on goal, adding another eight shots by the time the game was over.
Unfortunately, the Fairleigh Dickinson squad was able to prevent the Bears from scoring in the second half, despite their attempts which included four corner kicks. Sydney Schroeder led the UNC team offensively with three shots, two of which were on goal.
In the afternoon heat, the Bears cycled through 21 girls, the most they've played in a single game in the last five games. Among the many substitutions were Isabella Beal and Taylor Kochevar, both seeing playing time for the first time this season. Burdick added another six saves to her season total, now at 14.
"It just wasn't our day," head coach Tim Barrera said. "Going into the second half it's really about that first ten minutes. You can't make any big mistakes early and we made a couple of them that they ended up getting their two goals off of."
Looking ahead, the Bears return to Jackson Field next Sunday, September 13th, to play the Colorado State Rams before traveling up to Cheyenne, Wyoming to face the Wyoming Cowboys. The game in Greeley next week kicks off at 1:00PM MT. Following the Wyoming match, the team travels to Omaha, Nebraska in a two-game weekend against Creighton and Nebraska-Omaha.
With a week to prepare, Barrera noted that the team will work on performing better with the opportunities the game presents as well as creating better chances for themselves offensively, and making sure that defensive mistakes are at an absolute minimum in the future.
"At the end of the day, we should've scored a few more goals this weekend. That'll be something we work on this coming week as we head into the Colorado State game - creating more chances and scoring off of those chances. It's a good time to have a bit of a break not having another game until next Sunday because we have a couple players who are dinged up. We're about to go into an exhausting stretch the next four games, closing in on the start of our conference game schedule."
