The Bears go 2-0 on the weekend after a 1-0 win over Southeast Missouri State
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Northern Colorado Soccer moved to 3-1-0 on the season after a 1-0 win over the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks Sunday afternoon. The Redhawks outshot the Bears 10-5, but it was not enough for them to stop the visiting UNC team from picking up their third consecutive win.
In the first half alone, the Redhawks outshot the Bears 9-3, but were unable to get by UNC goalkeeper Madeline Burdick the entire period despite five shots on-goal.
SEMO took no time at all to come out offensively against UNC, taking three of their shots on-goal in the first five minutes of play.
On the other side of the field, all three of the Bears' shots in the half were on-goal, the first coming until 11 minutes into the game.
The same shot, by junior midfielder Kassy Castillo, resulted in a goal after Castillo was able to push past the keeper following a corner kick by Rebecca Lancia. Lancia has assisted in all three goals for UNC so far this season.
Despite efforts on both sides, neither team was able to put more points on the board the rest of the half, sending the teams into halftime at 1-0 in favor of Northern Colorado.
The second half was much slower for both teams, both only adding one shot on-goal, neither of which made it in.
Three yellow cards were handed out in the period, two on UNC alone, but the Bears did not let that stop them from pushing hard throughout the half to prevent the Redhawks from tying the game. After an 89th minute shot on-goal by SEMO in a last-ditch attempt to score, time expired and the Bears walked away with the win in their second-ever program meeting with the Missouri team.
Burdick not only earned her second shutout of the season (and her career), but she additionally picked up five saves throughout the game, a career high for a single game for the sophomore.
"We got a good win on the road over a quality and well-coached team," Tim Barrera weighed in. "Both teams played really hard – it even turned into a bit of a physical match. I think both teams were a bit tired from their matches earlier in the week and it was a hot muggy day playing on a turf field down in Cape Girardeau."
The Bears head back home to Greeley to prepare for their Friday evening match against Drake on Sept. 4. The game begins at 7:00 p.m. MT at Jackson Stadium.
