Soccer Wins Home Opener 1-0 Over Pittsburgh

Sydney Schroeder scored the game-winning goal in overtime to beat the Panthers
GREELEY - The UNC soccer team put on quite the show for fans in their 2015 home opener, beating the Pittsburgh Panthers 1-0 in the first overtime period. The Bears outshot Pitt by a whopping 18-8.
In the first half, Northern Colorado's defense managed to hold Pittsburgh to a mere three shots in the entire 45 minutes, only one of which was on-goal. Rebecca Lancia led the Bears' offense with two shots on-goal, one of which came directly from a corner kick, making up for two of the nine total shots the team made in the first half.
Jacqui Pulley, Maddie Roberts, and Shanlie Anderson all took shots near the end of the half trying to make something happen for the Bears, but neither team could get on the board, sending the game into halftime tied at 0-0.
The second half proved to be more aggressive for both teams, with the UNC squad taking their first two (of another seven) shots on-goal within the first five minutes of second-period play. Senior goalkeeper Kaitlin Ruff picked up another two saves in the half, knocking down any Pittsburgh attempts to pull ahead.
Lancia took another three corner kicks in the last five minutes of regulation, resulting in shot attempts by teammates Brooke Braden, Carolyn Cox, and Sydney Schroeder, but the Bears were unable to score, sending the game into overtime at 0-0.
The overtime period got off to a rough start after Schroeder was given a yellow card after almost a minute of play, but was quickly turned around less than two minutes later when Lancia made a pass to Schroeder (92') that she was able to capitalize on, ending the game and earning the Bears their second goal and wins of the season.
"Right before I scored I got a yellow card, which was obviously a bit frustrating," Schroeder said, "But it was exciting to get the goal in so quickly after. Rebecca and I talked at halftime about finding that final ball and it was great to see that get worked in and to find the result we wanted, especially because it was a golden goal."
This was the first time the Northern Colorado team had played an ACC school since 1987, and was the first time in program history they faced the University of Pittsburgh.
Head Coach Tim Barrera weighed in after the win, expressing how great of a team effort it was and how good for the program the win over an ACC team is.
Â
"I thought we played well - the best we've played this year. Pittsburgh is a good team, they're well coached and they gave us some issues for sure, but we handled it really well and some of the things we've been working on really came to light."
The squad heads back on the road this weekend as they venture out to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, where they'll meet the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks for the second time since the beginning of the 2014 season. The game begins at 1:00 p.m. CST. Last season, the Bears beat the Redhawks at Jackson Stadium, 1-0.
