Soccer Picks Up 1-0 Win Over Air Force

UNC goes 1-1 on the 2015 season opening weekend
BOULDER, Colo. – UNC Women's soccer finished out opening weekend this Sunday, defeating the Air Force Falcons in their second game of the season-long Colorado Cup. The Bears took the match, 1-0, out-shooting the Falcons 13-7.
The first half was a back and forth battle down to the last few seconds, each team taking six shots throughout the period. Air Force came out quickly, taking their first shot after only a minute of play. The Bears' shots came a bit later in the half, but four of the six were on-goal, including two rapid-fire shots by Sydney Schroeder, both just narrowly saved by Air Force goalkeeper Meghan Strang.
Freshman Mariel Gutierrez picked up her second collegiate start, also earning another shot on-goal for the team.
Two yellow cards were handed out in the first period, one to each team, but neither squad let that slow them down.
After an Air Force corner kick was taken wide left resulting in a goal kick, time expired, sending the teams into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
Northern Colorado proved a force to be reckoned with both offensively and defensively in the second half, only allowing the Air Force team one shot in the 45 minute-period. Air Force also picked up two more yellow cards in the half.
"We did a nice job of composing ourselves and I think our pressure wore down Air Force a bit – we got into a rhythm, calmed down, and started knocking the ball around," Barrera said. "We just did a really good job of creating chances for ourselves."
Offensively, UNC added four shots on goal in the second half, with Sydney Schroeder picking up the lone goal of the game – the first goal of the season for the Bears – in the 63rd minute. She was assisted by Madeline Chase and Rebecca Lancia.
"I'm very happy with the day. We saw a lot of growth through the weekend. We used twenty or so players and two goalkeepers, who are both do really well out there.
This win makes nine in a row for the Bears against Air Force, 11-4 all-time.
Northern Colorado heads back home to prepare for their home opener on Thursday August 27th against the University of Pittsburgh. The game begins at 7:00 p.m. MT. This will also be the first time the two teams have met in program history.
