Soccer Falls in Opener to Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS – The Northern Colorado women's soccer team opened their 2015 season on the road this Friday afternoon, taking on the Colorado College. The game was the first of the regular season for both teams, and was the first game of the 2015 Colorado Cup. UNC fell in a narrow contest to the Tigers, 1-0.
The first period of the match proved to be strong for the Bears defensively, as they held the Tigers to only two shots in the entire period. It took the CC 29 minutes to secure their first shot of the game, while the second did not occur until there were seconds left in the half; senior goalkeeper Kaitlin Ruff managed to earn her first save of the game, sending the game into halftime at a 0-0 tie.
Rebecca Lancia took all three corner kicks for the Bears in the first half, two of which came within the first 15 minutes of the game, on top of landing one shot on goal, which was narrowly saved by Colorado College's goalkeeper Louisa Mackenzie.
Freshman Mariel Gutierrez also picked up her first two collegiate shots in the first half, including the only other shot on goal for the Bears.
The Tigers came out stronger offensively in the second period, however, picking up an additional seven shots – four on goal – in the half. UNC managed to hold their ground against the cross-field battle until the 70th minute, when CC's Lauren Milliet scored the lone goal of the game.
The Bears added five more shots to their total in the second half, with two occurring in the last three minutes of the game.
Despite UNC fighting right until the final seconds of regulation, Colorado College took the match 1-0, increasing their winning streak at home against the Bears to 13-0 all-time.
The Bears now look forward to the rest of the weekend, starting with the Bears Bash and Sports Kickoff on Saturday. The team will be at the event from 12:00-1:00, at which time they will head down to Boulder for the Colorado Cup Special Olympics clinic.
The clinic will involve all six participating teams of the season-long tournament working the clinic, and offers an incredible chance for the programs to collectively give back to the entire state's community.
The Bears will then return to the field on Sunday Aug. 23 at 11:00 a.m. against Air Force, in the second game of the Colorado Cup. The game will be held at the University of Colorado's Prentup Field, and can be followed via live stats or by following the Bears on Twitter.
