Northern Colorado Baseball struggled against Air Force Falling 17-4
UNC (9-21) got on the board right away when Jensen Park (Kaneohe, Hawaii) worked a four-pitch walk as the second batter of the game. He then advanced to second on catcher's interference allowing Brandon Vaughn (Louisville, Colo.) to reach base.
Marco Castilla (Littleton, Colo.) had a productive outing moving both men into scoring position with two outs. Air Force starter Steven Trojan threw a wild pitch with Nick Tanner (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) at the plate to score Park. Vaughn would get stranded at third as the Bears led 1-0 after the top half of the first.
Air Force (16-19) came right back in the bottom half of the inning. The leadoff hitter drew a walk and proceeded to steal second. Just like the Bears, Air Force saw production from its three-hole hitter to move the runner to third base. An infield single brought around the score to tie the game at one apiece.
Air Force added another run with a triple to dead center field and it's third and final run on a sacrifice fly to center.
In the third the Falcons added another seven runs to take a commanding lead. Noah Pierce hit a home run to left field extending the lead to 4-1 to get things rolling. Overall, they added seven runs on five hits, leaving just one on base to take a 10-1 lead.
UNC responded to the Falcons big inning with a run of its own in the fourth. The team hit back-to-back-to-back singles from Cole Maltese (Superior, Colo.), Bryan Tibbitts (Westminster, Colo.) and Jake Garcia (Albuquerque, N.M.) to plate a run.
Garcia had the best day at the plate for the Bears going 2-for-3 with an RBI and drawing a walk.
Northern Colorado scored its final two runs in the seventh inning. Without recording a hit Reyn Sugai (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Rob Cashel (Park City, Utah) reached base to start the inning via a hit by pitch and a walk. After the Falcons recorded two outs, Tanner drove home the pair with a single to left field.
Air Force tacked on seven insurance runs in the fourth through seventh innings.
The Bears will return home for a three-game WAC series starting on Friday at 3:00 p.m. against Utah Valley.
