GREELEY, Colo. - The Northern Colorado Softball team is headed to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to take part in the inaugural Triple Crown Puerto Vallarta College Challenge on February 26-28, 2015, held at the Nancy Almaraz Stadium. The Bears will face Brigham Young University, University of Nevada, and Southern Illinois University in the inaugural event.
Â
"We are grateful to the University, our athletic department, and Triple Crown Sports for allowing us to participate in this tournament," said head coach Shana Easley. " It' the first tournament of its kind and it's a great opportunity for our student-athletes on many levels. We are looking forward to competing against some great programs and representing our program on an international level."
Â
The event will kick off Wednesday, Feb. 25 with practice times slotted for each school and clinics with local children run by coaches and players. Games will begin Thursday, Feb. 26 and conclude Saturday, Feb. 28. TCS will host a special banquet dinner with all teams following games on Saturday.
Â
Each school will play a four-or five-game schedule over three days on a beautiful stadium field built by event-producer Triple Crown Sports. The field sits a few blocks from a stunning beach and in the middle of a friendly, authentic Mexican community. Teams will stay at the all-inclusive Sheraton Hotel, which sits directly on the Pacific Ocean and is only a few blocks from both the practice and game fields. Almaraz Stadium seats approximately 500 spectators, and local vendors will be on hand selling food and drinks.
Â
"Puerto Vallarta is one of the friendliest, community-based towns in Mexico. Locals love the game of softball and are excited to come out and support this great event," said Tournament Director and President of Triple Crown Sports, David King. "We look forward to making this an annual tournament with the goal to give schools an opportunity to play competitive softball in a beautiful, tropical climate while experiencing the Mexican culture and giving back to the local community."
Â
When the Bears return home they will host their first home game of the year against in-state rival Colorado State University on March 10. The single game will start at 4:00 p.m.Â
