Four Bears reached double digits led by career nights from Anthony Johnson and Miles Seward
PDF BOX SCORE
GREELEY, Colo. – It was an offensive kind of night for Northern Colorado (2-6) men's basketball as they rolled past York College (8-7) 91-58 on Wednesday inside Bank of Colorado Arena.
The Bears had four finish in double figures in the win, led by career nights from junior guard, Anthony Johnson and freshman guard, Miles Seward.
It was the fourth time in eight games that Johnson has reached a new milestone in points. After coming off a season-low five points last week, the junior dropped 23 points, including 18 in the first half in the blowout victory.
Johnson shot 66.7% from the field (10-of-15) and finished 50% from three-point land (2-of-4). Johnson also led the team in rebounds, hauling in nine boards, just one rebound shy of a double-double.
"We always preach, don't play down to your competition, so we still went through our offense as usual and we went hard and tried not to take our foot off the pedal," Johnson said about the win. "I thought we executed a lot better (tonight), we worked a lot on offense this week in practice and it showed."
12 of Seward's 16 points came on the long ball (4-of-5) as the newcomer saw a career-high 24 minutes of court time against the Panthers. Seward was perfect in the first half, heading into the locker room 4-of-4 from the floor, with three of those makes coming from beyond the arc.
Two other Bears finished with double digits. Junior guard, Jordan Wilson notched his streak of 10 points or more to eight games, ending the night with 16 points.
Freshman guard, Jordan Davis rounded out the Bears high scoring performance, scoring 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Davis has now had four straight games in double figures.
"I think the thing I'm most pleased with is the sense of urgency they had to start the game," head coach B.J. Hill said. "I think they prepared mentally at a much higher level than they have the last four games. Anthony [Johnson] I thought, was the prime example of that because his game at UC-Riverside was not very good and that was because he didn't come mentally ready to play. Tonight, he was completely dialed in."
UNC led buzzer-to-buzzer in the 33-point victory and never took its foot off of the gas pedal. The guys from Greeley jumped out to a 19-8 lead before the second media timeout of the first half, aided by eight points from Johnson.
Stingy defense and hot shooting led to a 12-2 run over the next three minutes to push the advantage to 20 (30-10).
The Bears sealed half with another 8-0 run thanks to Seward who scored three straight buckets, including two from deep, to head into the locker room with a bountiful, 52-18 lead.
"We shared the ball better and we've talked about how our offense has to start helping our defense, meaning we can't take quick shots and try to make 'me' plays early in the shot clock," Hill added.
The second half was more of the same for UNC.
York came out firing, scoring the first five points of the second half, but it was all Bears after that as they pounded it in down low, making five straight baskets in the paint, cruising to the 91-58 win.
Northern Colorado had a prominent presence close to the rim all night, outscoring York College 42-16 in the paint.
As a team, UNC finished 36-of-74 (48.6%) from the field and 10-of-18 (55.6%) on three balls.
The Bears continue their home stand this Sunday, Dec. 13 when in-state rival, Colorado State comes to Bank of Colorado Arena for the first time since 2012. Tip against the Rams is slated for 5:00 p.m.
"I have the utmost respect for that program (Colorado State) – every year he (Eustachy) puts different pieces in there and gets the same output," Hill said about the next game against CSU. "They're extremely hard to guard. Their guards are as good as I've seen and as good as we'll face this year. We'll have to play more physical and play tougher and be a lot better than we were tonight."
