@unco_mbb Gets Statement Win Over Colorado State, 73-64
12/13/2015 9:24:00 PM | Men's Basketball
The Bears were led by performances from junior guards Jordan Wilson (20 points) and Dallas Anglin (19 points)
GREELEY, Colo. – Head Coach B.J. Hill was waiting for his team to get that first statement win of the season. Tonight his group of youngsters fulfilled that request, knocking off Colorado State 73-64 on Sunday night inside Bank of Colorado Arena.
It was the first time since the 2009-10 season that Northern Colorado (3-6) picked up a win over Colorado State (6-4) and the first time the Bears have done so with Hill at the helm.
A stingy UNC defense held the Rams to just 38.6% (22-of-57) on the night. The Bears also out-rebounded CSU, who ranks 26th in the NCAA in rebounding, 41-34, limiting their second chance points to just nine.
"That's our goal – that's a pretty lofty number, our goal every game is to hold opponents to 39.0% shooting and we haven't come close to it yet this year," head coach B.J. Hill said about his team's defensive performance. "Hopefully this is a learning tool to show that we're capable, which is sometimes a dangerous thing for a young team when they've shown what they're capable of because we as a staff have to hold them accountable to it and expect that of them."
Junior guard, Jordan Wilson led all scorers with 20 points in the victory. Wilson finished 8-of-14 from the field and scored 11 of his 20 points in the second half, including three big buckets down the stretch to keep the Bears out in front.
UNC's offense also got a boost from fellow junior guard, Dallas Anglin. After sitting out a full season due to NCAA transfer rules, Anglin came out firing, scoring 16 points in the first half on his way to a 19-point night. Anglin was unstoppable in the first half, converting 5-of-7 from the field, including a perfect 3-of-3 from downtown.
"At first I felt a little rushed, but after the first time I was subbed out coach and the guys just told me to take a deep breath and get back in there," Anglin said. "We played with patience on offense and with a different type of toughness. This was a pretty tough team (Colorado State) coming in and we had to match their intensity and energy and I think we did that."
As a team, Northern Colorado shot an even 50.0% (24-of-28) from the floor and 44.4% (8-of-18) from three-point land.
Colorado State held the lead in the early goings of the first half, but a jumper by Wilson at the 11:46 mark put the Bears on top, 17-16, a lead they wouldn't relinquish until the 16:57 point of the second half.
Anglin's three makes from behind the arc came in a three-minute span, and pushed the team's lead to seven, 28-21 at the seven minute media time out. The junior was fouled on his fourth three-point attempt of the half and proceeded to cash in all three of them at the charity strip to give the white jersey's a double-digit advantage, 31-21 just seconds later.
Northern Colorado led by as much as 12 points in the first half thanks to an Anglin one-handed slam, but the Rams fought back, scoring six unanswered points to make it a, 39-33 Bears lead going to intermission.
"I don't think there is any coincidence that this is the best we've played because that's the best we've followed a game plan for close to forty minutes, I would say," Hill said about the win. "Obviously when you add somebody into the rotation like Dallas [Anglin] and he performs like he did tonight – which was, we knew he was a good player, but to have that performance in your first game in over a year in that atmosphere and in that game, was pretty special. I think our guys fed off his energy and his performance and that gave them a lot of confidence."
Colorado State jumped on a 7-2 run in the opening minutes of the second half to take one of its two leads of half (42-41), which they only held for a mere 20 seconds before Anglin converted a three-point play the old fashioned way with the drive, make, and the foul, for his only points in the last 20 minutes of regulation.
After trading baskets, a knock-down three-pointer from junior guard, Anthony Johnson gave the Bears the upper hand, 48-45 with 14:13 to play in the game, a lead they didn't give up for the rest of the night. Johnson also finished in double figures with 10 points.
Northern Colorado never led by more than five over the next nine minutes of the half, with CSU making it a three-point difference twice (56-53, 64-61), but three clutch baskets from Wilson in the final five minutes of the game and two makes at the free throw with 60 seconds to go, all but sealed the win.
Johnson put an exclamation point on the W, with a dunk in the remaining seconds to bring it to the final score of 73-64.
"I'm awfully hard on them (the players) when they don't meet our expectations and so they deserve all the credit tonight," Hill added. "They're the ones that rose to the occasion – they're the ones that took on the assignments and executed them – they're the ones that took on the personal challenges and fulfilled them. I couldn't be happier, I couldn't be prouder of them."
Men's hoops will finish its three-game home stand on Wednesday night, Dec. 16 with the University of Denver coming to Bank of Colorado Arena. Tip against the Pioneers is in the books for 7:00 p.m.
