@UNCBearsWBB Big Sky Opening Comeback Falls Just Short

Northern Colorado women's basketball fell just short of a comeback win at Eastern Washington Thursday
CHENEY, Wash. – Northern Colorado (5-6, 0-1 Big Sky) women's basketball comeback effort fell just short on Thursday afternoon, falling at Eastern Washington 59-55.
"It was a very hard fought game for both teams today. It was both an encouraging and disappointing game for us," head coach Kamie Ethridge said. "We held a team to 59 points and did some nice things on defense, while still needing work on the offensive end to score."
Kianna Williams followed up a career game against Grand Canyon with another 19 points tonight. She added in five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
"Kiwi once again showed great competitiveness and drive with 19 points and just really impacted the game in a lot of different ways," stated Ethridge of her leading scorer.
The third quarter was the key to the game after a back and forth first half that featured three ties and four lead changes. EWU (7-6, 1-0 Big Sky) led at halftime by a score of 32-30.
Northern Colorado was paced in the first by Savannah Scott's 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting. She would finish the game with 12 points, seven rebounds, a steal and an assist.
"Savannah Scott, another young player for us, really affected the game and played a good floor game tonight," Ethridge said.
In the third quarter the Bears were out-scored 21-10. During the quarter the team was held scoreless from the 6:57 mark until the 1:16 mark. Over that time the Eagles went on a 12-0 run to go up by 16. By the time the quarter closed out, UNC trailed 53-40.
While the third belonged to Eastern, the fourth quarter was all UNC. The team opened the fourth scoring the first nine points to pull within four by the time the clock read 4:39.
The nine points came from Williams (5) and teammate Kourteney Zadina (4).
Zadina ended the night as the third Bear in double figures with 10 points and grabbing a career high tying seven rebounds. All of the boards came in the first half.
"I also liked the way Kourtney shot tonight and the shots she took," said Ethridge. "She did a good job competing on the boards and inside which is really good to see."
UNC cut the lead to three after a Savannah Smith layup with 44 seconds left, but could not get any closer than that as the Eagles would close out the game scoring three of the final five points.
"To have come back from the deficit the way we did tonight is great encouragement for us and shows how much we can and will continue to compete," Ethridge explained after the game.
The lose snaps the teams eight game Big Sky regular season win streak, and extends their season losing streak to four.
The Bears will look to get on the winning side on Saturday when they head to Idaho (9-4, 1-0 Big Sky). The Vandals opened Big Sky play Thursday afternoon with a 92-65 home victory over North Dakota.
"Now we get a chance to play a very good team in Idaho, who can really score the ball so that will be a challenge," said Ethridge.
Tip-off for the game is set for 3:00 p.m. mountain time.
