Five Bears Capture Titles at UNC Open

Northern Colorado Wrestling kicked off their 15-16 season Sunday, hosting UNC Open
GREELEY, Colo. - UNC Wrestling hosted the Northern Colorado Open Sunday, kicking off the wrestling at 9:15 a.m. and going straight through until the heavyweight finals match ended at 3:15 p.m. The Bears had five first place finishes, three second place finishes, and two third place finishes out of 155 total participants.
Redshirt junior Trey Andrews (125), junior Eleazar DeLuca (157), redshirt sophomore Keilan Torres (165), redshirt freshman Dylan Gabel (184), and redshirt senior Trent Noon (197) all picked up titles in their respective weight classes.
"What we're looking for out of all the guys on the roster is consistency. We saw that consistency in some of the guys like Trey Andrews, but other guys came out and were very inconsistent. That's something we work on everyday."
Andrews went 4-0 on the day, picking up two falls and two wins via technical falls. In the 125-pound finals, Andrews wrestled Levi Maes of NW Kansas Technical College, but accumulated a lead of 16-0 to end the match before the two even reached the third period. Andrews was one of three UNC wrestlers who qualified for Nationals last season.
DeLuca, a transfer from Clackamas CC, also went 4-0 in his matches, including a fall (2:26) over a Colorado Mesa opponent in his first match of the day, and then a technical fall over another Colorado Mesa wrestler (18-2) in the 157-pound finals. This was his first tournament participating as a Divison I wrestler.
"Trey Andrews looked like the Trey Andrews we've seen all year. He's been very consistent and he went out and dominated lesser opponents. We don't expect anything else; he went out and did what he was supposed to. The Eleazar we've seen in the practice room is phenomenal and we saw that today. He proved that we made a good decision wrestling him riht out of the gate, and I think he can wrestle up there with anyone in the country."
Oklahoma State transfer Torres also had an outstanding showing in his first tournament as a Bear, picking up two pins and an 18-2 technical fall. His first place match against Colorado Mesa's Jessie Hoffschneider was much closer, with Torres pulling out a one-point decision 4-3.
After picking up a second-place finish last season, Gabel pulled out a 3-2 win over teammate Nikko Reyes for the title this year. His first two wins of the day came by technical fall and pin, sending him into a semifinals match with Wyoming wrestler Luke Paine. Gabel advanced to the finals after defeating Paine 9-4.
"Gable looked great and he said that he felt great. We have two very solid competitors at 184 and I expect both of them to get the job done - Gabel just happened to be the one to get it done today. His commitment to practicing in the off season was huge for his improvement. He truely believes he's one of the best in the country and this win will be a big mental boost. We expect him to go out and win against anyone he wrestles and I think this weekend showed that he can compete with those top wrestlers."
Trent Noon rounded out the Bear champions for the day, tallying three straight wins for his first-place finish including a fall in 33 seconds. Noon defeated Wyoming's Brandon Tribble for a ticket to the finals match, where he faced another Wyoming opponent (Cody Vigoren). He would end up majoring Vigoren, 12-2. Noon finished third at the UNC Open last season, and took first place the year before in his first year with the Bears after transferring from Clackamas CC.
"Trent is very critical of himself because he is so determined to win a national title this year. He needs to do a better job of opening up his opponents in some of the situations he encountered today, and we're working on creating more offense in those types of matches; if he does that he'll definitely be able to win a national title."
True freshman Rico Montoya came out strong in his first collegiate tournament, going 3-0 in his first three matches of the day at 133 pounds, including a first round fall and a quarterfinal technical fall, before losing via pin in the finals against Paul Garcia (Wyoming).
Nikko Reyes, a transfer from the University of Illinois, had two wins on the day to advance to the 184-pound finals, where he fell to teammate Dylan Gabel 3-2 to finish second overall.
Heavyweight transfer Jack Kuck blew through his bracket with three straight wins before losing in the finals match against Wyoming's Sam Eagan in TB1, 2-1.
UNC also brought home three third place finishes by Timmy Box (149) and Horacio Vialpando (174). The pair would go a combined 9-2 on the day, including five pins and two technical falls.
The Bears continue their season next Saturday at the Wyoming-hosted Cowboy Open [Nov. 7th] up in Laramie, Wyoming. UNC will open their dual meet season the following week when they travel to New Mexico for a double header against Arizona State and Grand Canyon on Nov. 12th.
