UNC's four game Big Sky winning streak was snapped Sunday afternoon in Cedar City
CEDAR CITY, Utah – Northern Colorado Women's Soccer lost their first Big Sky game of the season on Sunday afternoon, 1-0, at Southern Utah. Both teams took 16 shots with five on goal.
The Bears outshot the Thunderbirds 10-6 in the first half, with both teams managing three shots on goal.
"It's tough to be on the road in the Big Sky – it's a lot of travel and you have to be able to perform," head coach Tim Barrera stated. "We'll regroup after this loss and get ready to get back on the road next weekend."
Redshirt senior Ambree Bellin managed the first shot on goal for UNC in the 12th minute, but SUU goalkeeper Taylor Bolding stopped the ball before it could reach the net. The other two shots on goals for the Bears game in the 18th and 19th minutes by Adrienne Jordan and Sydney Schroeder, respectively. Neither of them were able to get the ball past Bolding, though, and the team was unable to land another shot on goal for the remainder of the half.
The SUU first half was fairly similar, taking only one shot on goal that did not make it further than UNC goalkeeper Kaitlin Ruff. The Thunderbirds did pick up two yellow cards in the first half, though, with 10 fouls total.
Time would expire in the first period, sending the teams into halftime tied at 0-0.
Northern Colorado continued to fight hard in the second half, with six shots (two on goal) as well as adding another five corner kicks to the five they picked up in the first half.
Southern Utah's Haley Adams picked up her second yellow card of the game, and subsequently a red card, in the 70th minute of play, leaving the Thunderbirds down a player the remaining 20 minutes.
Defensively, the team held SUU to two shots on goal despite them having ten shots total in the half.
Despite being a player down, Southern Utah managed to score with five minutes remaining in the game. The goal was made via a header off of a free kick following a foul/yellow card on UNC's Brook Braden.
The Bears made multiple attempts at tying up the game in the remaining minutes, but were unable to capitalize on their chances. The UNC's four-game winning streak came to an end, pushing their Big Sky record to 4-1 on the season.
Overall, UNC had 10 corner kicks to SUU's one, which is a season high for the Bears, over the eight corner kicks the team had in their game against Drake on September 4th. Additionally, SUU had 21 fouls, compared to UNC's eight.
"We had our chances – they had 21 fouls so we had 21 free kicks on top of our 10 corners, but we just weren't able to convert any of them," said Barrera.
The Bears squad stays on the road next weekend, traveling to Sacramento, California to face Sacramento State on Friday [Oct. 16 5PM] and then to Portland, Oregon to face Portland State on Sunday [Oct. 18, 2PM].
