Northern Colorado picked up another Big Sky win, 2-1 over the Hornets
Sacramento, Calif. - Northern Colorado women's soccer defeated the Sacramento State Hornets on Friday, 2-1 in double overtime.
This is only the second time in program history that the Bears have defeated the Hornets, the first time coming in 2012, 2-0, in Greeley.
Senior Adrienne Jordan got things rolling for the Bears, taking the first shot of the game in the sixth minute. Before the Hornets could manage their first shots of the game in the 12th minute, Jordan would take another shot (hitting the cross bar) on top of sophomore Brooke Braden taking two shot attempts as well.
Despite taking eight shots total in the first half, the Bears were unable to make a goal. Defensively, however, the team kept Sacramento State to only five shot attempts in the half, and they were unable to make it by UNC goalkeeper Madeline Burdick, sending the game into halftime tied at 0-0.
In the second period of play, Braden made the first move, with a blocked shot nearly two minutes in. One minute later, Mariel Gutierrez drew a foul against SAC inside the box; Essence Ortiz-Laneir took the penalty kick, scoring the first goal of the game and putting the Bears up 1-0. This was the first successful penalty kick the Bears have taken this season (fourth attempt on the year).
The Hornets came back fighting, making three shot attempts and allowing zero from the Bears, until tying up the game in the 66th minute. The Bears took four shot attempts in the remaining 24 minutes of the second half, but were unable to get one end, sending the game into overtime.
The first overtime period was not successful for either side, with the only shot from either team coming from SAC and going far wide. Both teams also made one corner kick each in the ten minute period.
Going into the second and final overtime period, both teams rallied. Sacramento State managed two shots, one saved and one going wide, before Bear freshman Gutierrez put the ball straight into the goal off of a free kick. With only 58 seconds remaining on the clock, the goal ended the game giving UNC a win, 2-1.
Overall, the Bears and Hornets each had 15 shots in the game, but the Bears had seven on goal compared to SAC's six. Burdick also picked up six saves for the Bears in goal.
The Bears play again this Sunday, Oct. 18, in Portland, Oregon, where they'll face the Portland State Vikings in another Big Sky Conference matchup.
