Northern Colorado volleyball falls to DU in three sets.
GREELEY — Northern Colorado's volleyball team's seven-match win streak was snapped Saturday afternoon by the University of Denver in a sweep (15-25, 18-25, 23-25).
The Bears honored senior middle blockers Brianna Strong (Mount Vernon, Iowa) and Andrea Spaustat (Omaha, Neb.) before the match, and they did not disappoint the crowd in their final home match. Spautat led the team with 14 kills, while Strong finished second with 10.
UNC struggled in the first two sets, hitting under .200 in both sets. Denver, on the other hand, hit well in the sets going .344 and .483, respectively.
"We did not have our greatest match tonight. We struggled in all aspects of the game," said head coach Lyndsey Oates.
In the first set both teams split the first 12 points before DU went on a 7-3 run. The Pioneers would hold on to that lead the rest of the way.
The second set was similar to the first, with both teams splitting the first few points before another Denver run. This time it was a 6-2 run, giving DU the lead for good. Nola
Basey was a key asset for DU all match, finishing with 20 kills.
Coming out the locker room from intermission, UNC came out with a renewed spark. Audrey Landry (Richardson, Texas) came in to set the third set, and put up career-highs
with 14 assists and three kills. Spaustat had her best set in her final one, recording nine of her 12 kills in the set.
"The outcome does not concern me much," Oates said. "We are a resilient team and will come back and be ready to go for our first round match in the NCAA Tournament next week."
The Bears will now prepare for the NCAA Tournament that starts Friday, Dec. 5. They will learn who and where they play during the NCAA Volleyball Selection Show. The team will host a watch party of the show at 6 p.m. Sunday in the High Plains Room at Nottingham Field. The viewing party is free and open to the public.
