Northern Colorado volleyball fell 3-1 in the NCAA Tournament Friday evening
FORT COLLINS – Northern Colorado volleyball fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against the University of Colorado Friday evening (19-25, 15-25, 26-14, 15-25) at Moby Arena.Â
"Disappointing loss. I thought this was a great match-up for us," head coach Lyndsey Oates said. "We have a lot to celebrate about the season though. This team improved a lot over the season, and we were able to go out and win the conference."
Brianna Strong (Mount Vernon, Iowa) played well for Northern Colorado in her final collegiate match, leading the Bears with 13 kills on a .346 hitting percentage.
UNC's winning set came in a hard-fought third round. The Bears got out to an early 7-1 lead in the set before Colorado battled back to tie it at 11.
The teams traded points until CU took a 24-23 lead. Northern Colorado closed the set on a 3-0 run. An Alex Klohn (Corona, Calif.) kill tied the match at 24. Makenna Meier (Lincoln, Neb.) followed with ace, and Andrea Spaustat (Omaha, Neb.) won the set with a kill and extended the match.
"They gave us some errors early on in game three, and that allowed us to get into a comfort zone," Oates said.
The Bears struggled offensively on the night, being held to .075 hitting. That was the lowest hitting percentage for UNC since facing Loyola Marymount in September.
On the defensive side, Northern Colorado had four players finish with double-digit digs. Meagan Garcia led the team with 13, and she was backed up by Kendra Cunningham (11), Ashley Guthrie (10) and Meier (10).
In the fourth set, Colorado got out to a quick lead at 10-4 and never looked back.
Colorado used the duo of Taylor Simpson and Alexis Austin most of the night, as they finished with 21 and 16 kills, respectively.Â
