Behind stellar defense in the second half, UNC's women's basketball team remained undefeated.
OMAHA, Neb. – Northern Colorado's women's basketball team continued its best start in the program's Division I history moving to 4-0 with a win over Nebraska-Omaha Friday night, 67-58.
A stellar defensive effort in the second half by the Bears was key to the victory. UNC held the Mavericks to 25.9 percent shooting in the half compared to the 53.6 percent in the first half. Northern Colorado also forced 10 of UNO's 14 turnovers in the second half.
"I am very proud of our team for pulling out the hard-fought victory tonight," said head coach Kamie Ethridge. "It was great to see the team make a statement on the defensive end after we struggled in the first half."
The Bears offense came from the square state trio of Stephanie Lee (Casper, Wyo.), Kyleigh Hiser (Laramie, Wyo.) and D'shara Strange (Fountain). Lee led the team with 24 points and was backed up by Hiser's at 16 and Strange's 15.
Strange also led UNC in rebounds with nine, all on the defensive end.
"Stephanie was amazing. Offensively, she was just someone we could throw the ball to and she made basket after basket," Ethridge said. "D'shara made some big plays late and was a key to our defense in the second half."
The key stretch in the game started at the 5:41 mark of the second half when Northern Colorado went on a, 12-3 run over a four-minute span. Lee and Hiser combined for eight of the 12 points during the run.
The Bears and Mavericks battled back and forth in the first half with four ties and five lead changes. The largest lead either team would have was UNO's six-point advantage at the 2:14 mark, 34-29. UNC would close that gap by the half though, trailing 37-34.
Lee led all Bears in the first half with 14 points, going 7-of-9 from the field. The team had good ball movement in the half, with nine assists on the team's 14 baskets.
In the second half, Nebraska-Omaha got out to a quick start, extending its lead to eight in the first minute before UNC would start its comeback. The Bears were able to tie the game at 45 with 10:41 left on the clock.
The teams would trade a couple baskets before Northern Colorado was able to go on the decisive 12-3 run to end it.
The Bears will stay in the Cornhusker state to take on #15 Nebraska at 1 p.m. (MST) on Sunday, Nov. 30 in Lincoln.
