UNC's women's basketball team fight's hard, but falls just short against #15 Nebraska
LINCOLN, Neb.—After falling behind early to #15 Nebraska, Northern Colorado's women's basketball team fought back to fall just short of pulling off the upset, with a final score of 63-56.
Senior Amber Van Deudekom (Brea, Calif.) had a career day with 20 points in 35 minutes of play. It was the second time in her career scoring double-digits and her first time ever leading the Bears (4-1) in scoring. She was the only UNC player to post double figures.
The Bears top two scorers this season, D'shara Strange (Fountain) and Stephanie Lee (Casper, Wyo.) battled foul trouble all day, finishing with one and six points, respectively.
Nebraska opened the game scoring the first 13 points and built its lead all the way to 21 by the 8:33 mark of the first half. That would be the largest lead the Huskers would get, as the Bears fought their way back.
"I am really proud of our entire team effort tonight on the road in a tough environment against a top 15 team. This was a test for us and we knew it coming in," head coach Kamie Ethridge said. "To fall behind early and battle back, it was amazing to watch."
The two teams battled back and forth until UNC went on a 19-5 run to end the first half, closing the gap to 38-35. Freshman Kianna Williams (Perris, Calif.) had six of her career-high nine points during the run.
The Bears took their first lead of the game two minutes into the second half on a Van Deudekom jumper.
Nebraska and Northern Colorado traded baskets until the Huskers held the Bears scoreless for a four-minute stretch, giving the Huskers a six-point lead.
UNC continued to battle the rest of the game, getting Nebraska's lead down to two with 2:13 left, but were unable to tie the game back up.
"I think if we can build on what we showed tonight it can give us confidence moving forward both in conference and non-conference play," Ethridge said.
The Bears will now come home for a three-game home stand, starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Air Force at Bank of Colorado Arena.
