Six turnovers proved costly as it wasn't the outcome the Bears were hoping for on Senior Day
"Turnovers. We came out in the second half and tried to spread them out because they are an attacking defense and tried to pump the ball down the field," Head Coach Earnest Collins Jr., said. "Turnovers and protection that's basically what it was. I don't care who it is, they have a good defense, but you still can't turn the ball over. It's one thing to go three and out and punt the ball. It's another thing when you have the turnovers."
Sophomore quarterback Sean Rubalcaba finished his final game of the season, 18-29-2 for 211 yards passing and a touchdown. Back up junior quarterback, Jonathan Newsom also saw action in the second half, compiling 8-10-0 for 90 yards and a TD.
Stimphil finished his career at UNC on a high note, grabbing nine balls for 157 yard and two touchdowns. The 157 yards receiving gave him 2,498 career yards, ranking him first all-time in Division I program history in receiving yards, breaking the previous record of 2,470 held by Jace Davis.
Northern Colorado's defensive unit was led by senior defensive back, Courtney Hall who posted double-digit tackles with 10. Behind Hall was senior defensive tackle, Lexington Smith with eight stops, and senior defensive end, Kyle Todd who produced seven tackles in the loss.
Northern Colorado was held scoreless throughout the first two quarters of action, but North Dakota was able to put up 17 points on the scoreboard in the first 30 minutes of play.
UND took their opening drive, 70 yards on eight plays to score the game's first points. North Dakota quarterback Keaton Studsrud found wide out Josh Seibel from 11 yards out for the score.
Northern Colorado mustered just 30 yards of total offense and trailed, 7-0 after the first quarter.
The second quarter was more of the same for the Bears as the offense was unable to get going. North Dakota tacked on 10 more points after a Jer Garman rushing touchdown and a Reid Taubenheim 47-yard field goal, giving UND a 17-0 advantage at the half.
UNC went into the locker room with 76 yards of total offense and had two turnovers in the stat book.
"I told the kids to keep fighting," said Collins. "We got thirty minutes to try to get these guys (the seniors) a W."
After a senior running back Robert Holland fumble to open up the third quarter, North Dakota put its second field goal through the uprights, making it a 20-0 game.
The Bears looked like a completely different team after the fumble, only needing two plays to find the end zone for the first time in the game.
Rubalcaba hit Stimphil on a screen pass and the wide out did the rest, breaking two tackles and going 85 yards to pay dirt. Just like that, UNC was back in the game trailing, 20-7 with 11:08 remaining in the third quarter.
After trading the next two drives, another costly turnover put UND in scoring position. North Dakota's Domo Blackmon picked off Rubalcaba and returned it 31 yards to the Northern Colorado 3-yard line. After a personal foul call on UNC, Garman rushed it in from two yard out for his second TD of the game, putting North Dakota back out in front, 27-7.
The Bears entered the fourth quarter down by 20 to UND.
Two more Taubenheim field goals opened up the fourth quarter for North Dakota padding their lead to, 33-7.
Newsom led the offense the entire fourth quarter and had success, completing 80% of his passes for 90 yards and throwing the Bears second touchdown pass of the game.
With less than 30 seconds remaining, Newsom let it fly from the UND 23-yard line. Stimphil jumped up in the end zone and hauled it in for his second touchdown reception of the game, producing the final score of 33-14.
Between Rubalcaba and Newsom the Bears netted 301 yards throughout the air, but were held to just 18 yard on the ground due to a stout North Dakota defensive line.
Northern Colorado ended the contest with six turnovers on the day, their most of any game this season.
"It's disappointing," said Collins. "Because there are several (games) we felt we left out there that could have been won, but for whatever reason we left them out there, so it's definitely disappointing, but after the kids due their exit interviews and take the time off, they'll come back after Christmas break ready to start working to get ready for next year."
UNC ends the season 3-8 and 2-6 in conference play. All-Conference nominations will be announced this upcoming Monday, Nov. 24.
