Ogden, Utah- Northern Colorado Bears Women's Soccer took the field against the Wildcats of Weber State this Friday. The Bears entered the game having never beaten Weber on the road, but that quickly changed as Northern Colorado scored three goals, winning the match, 3-1.
"It was really nice to get our first conference win of the season on the road, especially at a tough place like Weber," said head coach Tim Barrera. "This win will give our young team the confidence moving forward this year."
In the first half of play the Bears jumped on the board first in the 10th minute of the match. Senior forward, Juliana Grover displayed some nice footwork, beating two defenders and lacing the ball in the back of the net, for Grover's third goal on the year. UNC continued to pressure the Wildcat defense, putting seven shots on goal and three corners in the first 12 minutes of the match.
It didn't take long for Weber Stat to knot things back up at, 1-1. The Wildcats found the net in the 12th minute of the match when junior Mackenzie Harrison, served up a great corner kick finding the head of Brecken Holbrook, also for her third goal of the season.
The score would again volley back to the advantage of Northern Colorado after freshman forward, Brooke Braden and junior midfielder, Rebecca Lancia found themselves on a two-on-one break against the Wildcat defense. Braden found Lancia with a great pass, and she did the rest, beating the keeper to go back on top, 2-1.
"I was proud of the way the girls played," said Barrera. "Ruff made some big plays tonight especially in the first half by saving a really close goal. It nice to see how our defense came together in the second half when they applied the extra pressure."
The rest of the first half was back and forth with neither team giving up any more ground. After the first 45 minutes of action, the Bears rattled off eleven shots, four on-goal and earned three corners. The Wildcats offense was just as tough, firing off eight shots, four on-goal and earning one corner kick.
The Bears entered halftime with a, 2-1 lead.
In the second half UNC began right where they left off. In the 75th minute of the match Senior defender, Adrienne Jordan stormed past the defense, putting the ball in the top left of the net for a third Bears goal.
The rest of the half, Sophomore goalkeeper, Katlin Ruff found herself making some big time saves for the Bears. She saw a total of 21 shots at her, adding 7 saves on to her résumé. UNC would ride the two-goal lead all the way to the final whistle, beating the Wildcats, 3-1 for their first conference victory of the year and moving them to 6-5-1 on the season.
The women's soccer team continues their road trip, taking on Idaho State on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 1:00 p.m. in Pocatello, Idaho.
