POCATELLO, Idaho. – After falling behind early in the second half, Northern Colorado (7-5-1, 2-1) fought back scoring two unanswered goals to down Idaho State (5-6, 2-2), 2-1, going undefeated on the weekend.
Junior Forward, Essence Ortiz-Laneir netted her first game-winning goal of the year with 10 seconds remaining in the game. After a big save from sophomore goalkeeper, Kailtin Ruff the Bears moved the ball quickly down the field. Senior forward, Juliana Grover lofted it to Laneir who fired one in the top right corner of the net to give UNC the, 2-1 victory.
"Idaho State is a really tough team to face at home," said head coach Tim Barrera. "They came out and put a lot of pressure on us and I'm really proud of how the team responded and fought back and produced two goals to get us the win."
It was a familiar situation in the first half for UNC with neither team giving up any ground. The Bears' offense had plenty of opportunities in the first 45 minutes of action, accumulating six corner kicks, but only getting off four shots.
Ruff was quite busy in the first half, picking up six saves on eight Idaho State shots.
The Bengals struck first, just six minutes into the second half when midfielder, Whitney Peterson received a cross from Amanda Ellsworth and put the ball past Ruff from 8-yards out to give Idaho State the, 1-0 advantage.
UNC responded seven minutes later when senior defender, Adrienne Jordan kicked a perfectly placed ball into the center of the box, finding junior midfielder, Kassy Castillo who scored off the header to even the scoreboard at, 1-1. The goal was the third of the season for Castillo.
"Kassy's goal was from great communication and teamwork," said Barrera. "Adrienne brought it up and put an excellent foot on it and Kassy finished it for us when we needed it."
With 30 minutes remaining in the half, there was plenty of time for the game to go either way for the Bears. Ruff continued to come up big for UNC, making five more stops over the next 13 minutes.
With time winding down, Ruff transitioned the ball after coming up with yet another save. Sophomore midfielder Sydney Schroeder played a ball down the sidelines to Grover. Grover carried the ball then crossed it to Laneir who turned and fired, producing the game winner with just seconds left in the game.
"I'm happy to come out of this weekend, 2-0," said Barrera. "We played some excellent teams and I thought we performed well. Our girls continue to develop and two road wins will help us as we come back home for four straight games."
Northern Colorado returns to Jackson Field for a four-game home stand, beginning with Southern Utah next Friday, Oct. 10 at 7:00 p.m.
