University of Northern Colorado Director of Track & Field announced the addition of assistant track & field coach Phil Bennett to his staff Aug. 29, 2023.
Bennett joins the Bears’ staff after coaching privately and at the high school level for several seasons.
“I am very excited about the addition of Phil Bennett to our coaching staff,” Angel said. “His primary responsibilities will include working with our hurdlers, vaulters and multi athletes. His experience in multis and hurdles makes Phil an automatic impact hire for the program.”
His coaching career began at Charlotte Christian High School in Charlotte, N.C., where he was responsible for coaching the hurdles, sprints, and throws. During his tenure at Charlotte Christian, he coached State Champions in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles.
After moving back to Colorado, he joined the coaching staff at Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins, where he was responsible for coaching hurdles and pole vault. In addition, he is an active volunteer with the Colorado state track and field program, serving as an official and clerk during home meets.
Bennett holds Altis and USA Track & Field coaching certifications in hurdles, sprints and pole vault.
He won the 100 hurdles in his age group at the 2019 master’s Outdoor Championships. He represented Team USA at the World master’s Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland where he competed in the indoor heptathlon.
Bennett continues to compete at the master’s Track and Field level in the hurdles and multi-events, qualifying for All-American status in both the hurdles and the multi-events ranked in the top ten in the U.S. and top 25 in the world rankings in both on a regular basis.
A native of Denver, Colorado, Bennett began his college track career at Adams State, before completing his career at Colorado State, competing in hurdles and relays. In addition, he coached multiple throwers to all-state honors in the shotput and discus.
After graduating from Colorado State with a degree in finance, he worked in
various capacities across Wall Street.
Bennett resides in Fort Collins, Colorado with his wife Tracy- a proud UNC alum. They have four children and a German Shepherd named Cash.
