UNC Baseball Comes Up Short In Series Finale Against Omaha
5/3/2026 4:41:00 PM | Baseball
The game featured a combined 23 runs and 28 hits, with momentum swinging throughout before Omaha pulled ahead for good in the ninth inning.
Northern Colorado wasted no time responding after Omaha struck first with a two-run homer in the opening frame. The Bears answered with a five-run bottom of the first, highlighted by RBI hits from Logan Pruski, Mason Griffin, Easton Bryant and Sam Pease to take an early 5-2 lead.
The Bears continued to apply pressure in the third inning, plating three more runs behind a Brandon Sanchez RBI double and another run-scoring hit from Pruski to extend the lead to 8-3.
After Omaha chipped away, Northern Colorado added insurance in the fifth and sixth innings. Jaden Stone delivered an RBI single in the fifth, while Ethan Mooser drove in a run in the sixth to give the Bears a 10-7 advantage heading into the late innings.
Omaha capitalized on key opportunities in the sixth and seventh innings, taking advantage of defensive miscues to pull within one. The Mavericks then delivered the decisive blow in the ninth, scoring three runs on a pair of hits to reclaim the lead at 12-10.
Northern Colorado mounted one final push in the bottom of the ninth. The Bears loaded the bases and scored a run on a balk to cut the deficit to one but were unable to bring across the tying run.
Offensively, Northern Colorado was led by Griffin, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Pruski added two hits, two RBI's and reached base four times. Sanchez also contributed a multi-hit effort with two runs scored, and the Bears drew 13 walks as a team in the high-scoring affair.
ON DECK: The Bears will shift their focus and travel to Fargo, N.D. to take on North Dakota State May 8-10.
