GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado baseball battled deep into the game, but a decisive eighth inning from Omaha proved to be the difference in a 6-3 loss on Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field.
The Bears trailed just 3-2 through seven innings before Omaha broke through in the eighth, using a three-run frame to create the separation.
Northern Colorado got on the board first in the second inning. Mason Griffin drew a lead off walk and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Wilson Kieffer, setting up Ethan Mooser for an RBI single to give UNC a 1-0 lead.
Omaha answered to tie the game in the fourth, but the Bears responded in the fifth behind Mooser once again. Mooser sent a solo home run to right field, evening the score at 2-2 and continuing his strong day at the plate.
The Mavericks regained the lead in the seventh with an RBI double, but UNC remained within one heading into the final two innings.
Omaha delivered the decisive blow in the eighth, capitalizing on scoring opportunities and using a key two-RBI triple to push its advantage to four runs.
The Bears showed life in the bottom half of the inning. Brandon Sanchez reached on an error and later came around to score on a Jaden Stone RBI single, trimming the deficit to 6-3. However, Northern Colorado was unable to generate further offense in the ninth.
Mooser paced the Bears offensively, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Brandon Sanchez added two hits, while Jake Bullard chipped in a hit as well.
