GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado baseball used a big third inning and strong bullpen effort to earn a 5-4 win over Air Force in a midweek match up at Jackson Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bears broke through in the bottom of the third, plating four runs to take control early. Logan Pruski jump started the rally with a solo home run to left, followed shortly by Jake Bullard who also went deep to give Northern Colorado a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Ethan Mooser and Brien Kenny each delivered RBI plays to extend the advantage to 4-0.
Air Force responded in the fourth with a solo home run, but Northern Colorado's pitching staff kept the Falcons in check through the middle innings. Mason Bright earned the win in relief, tossing two solid innings while allowing just one run. The Bears bullpen combined to limit Air Force to four runs on eight hits while striking out eight.
Northern Colorado added an important insurance run in the seventh inning when Mooser came through again with an RBI single, pushing the lead to 5-1.
The Falcons made things interesting late, scoring twice in the eighth and once more in the ninth to cut the deficit to one. With the tying run threatening, Mitch Haythorn shut the door, recording the final outs to secure his first save of the season.
Mooser led the Bears offensively with a 2-for-4 performance and two RBIs, while Pruski and Bullard each contributed home runs. Mason Griffin added two runs scored and created pressure on the basepaths throughout the afternoon.
Northern Colorado will look to carry the momentum forward as they return to conference play later this week.
