GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado baseball secured a series victory over North Dakota State on Sunday, powering past the Bison 10–5 behind a dominant early surge and timely late offense at Jackson Field.
The Bears wasted no time taking control, erupting for six runs in the bottom of the second inning to build a commanding lead they would not relinquish. Northern Colorado strung together five hits in the frame, highlighted by RBI doubles from Wilson Kieffer and Ethan Fillinger, while Jaden Stone added an RBI single as part of the offensive outburst.
UNC continued to apply pressure throughout the afternoon, finishing with 14 hits as eight different players recorded a hit. Kieffer led the charge with a four-hit performance and two RBI's, while Brandon Sanchez delivered a standout day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a game-sealing three-run home run in the eighth inning.
After jumping out to a 6–0 lead, the Bears saw North Dakota State chip away in the middle innings. The Bison plated three runs in the fifth and pulled within one after a two-run homer in the seventh, trimming the deficit to 6–5.
Northern Colorado responded immediately, adding a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Fillinger to create some breathing room. The Bears then put the game out of reach in the eighth when Sanchez launched a three-run homer to center, capping the scoring and sealing the series-clinching victory.
On the mound, Jake Storey set the tone early, tossing four shutout innings while allowing just two hits and striking out four to earn the win.
The bullpen combined to limit the damage down the stretch, with Logan Borboa closing the door with two scoreless innings and five strikeouts.
ON DECK: Northern Colorado baseball will continue in Summit League play as it hits the road this weekend for a series at St. Thomas.
