Bears Close GCU Tournament with 4-2 Win Over Harvard

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Northern Colorado closed out the GCU Tournament Sunday afternoon with a strong 4-2 win over Harvard at GCU Softball Stadium, securing its fourth victory of the season.
The Bears struck first in the opening inning. Amailee Morales ignited the rally with a double to deep center, and back-to-back singles from KK Christie and Ella Gonzales plated the game's first run. Christie later scored on a throwing error to give Northern Colorado a 2-0 advantage.
Harvard answered in the third with a two-out, two-RBI single from Sophie Sun to even the score at 2-2, but the Bears quickly responded in the bottom half. Krista Francia singled to start the inning, Morales followed with another base hit, and Gonzales delivered her second RBI single of the day to restore a 3-2 lead.
Northern Colorado added insurance in the fifth. Christie drew a walk, stole second and came around to score on an RBI single up the middle by Ellyse Hydock, extending the lead to 4-2.
Grace Algrim earned the win in the circle, tossing four innings and striking out four while allowing two earned runs. Anna Wilming entered in relief and secured her first save of the season, throwing three scoreless innings and limiting the Crimson to just two hits.
Francia and Morales each recorded two hits, while Gonzales drove in two runs as the Bears outhit Harvard 9-6 in the tournament finale.
RECORD WATCH: Amailee Morales ranks 1st all-time in doubles (47), home runs (29) and walks (90) in program history.
Morales sits 2nd in RBIs (121), just one shy of the Northern Colorado career record of 122.
She also ranks 8th in hits (153), 4th in total bases (291) and 6th in putouts (635).
Ella Gonzales ranks 11th all-time in RBIs (81), 11th in walks (51) and 11th in home runs (14).
Gonzales also sits 7th in program history in hit by pitch (18) as she continues to climb UNC's career charts.

Northern Colorado continues non-conference play next weekend at the UTSA Tournament, traveling to San Antonio for five games over three days at Roadrunner Field. The Bears open Friday against Stephen F. Austin before facing tournament host UTSA later that afternoon.
Saturday begins with a morning matchup against UMass Lowell, followed by a second game later in the day determined by tournament results. The weekend concludes Sunday with a final placement game.
