WICHITA, Kan. – Northern Colorado wrapped up Sunday's doubleheader at Wichita State with a pair of tough losses at Eck Stadium, falling 11–0 in the opener before dropping game two, 7–3.
In game one, the Bears were limited to four hits and were held scoreless as Wichita State pulled away with a big fifth inning to secure the 11–0 victory. Northern Colorado threatened early, loading the bases in the first inning, but was unable to push a run across. Zeke Minic, Mason Griffin, Sam Pease and Ethan Fillinger each recorded a hit for the Bears.
On the mound, Jake Storey worked four solid innings to start the game, allowing three runs while striking out five. The Shockers broke the game open in the fifth with a 10-run frame, highlighted by a three-run home run and multiple extra-base hits, turning a one-run game into a lopsided result. Despite the final score, the Bears stayed within reach through the first four innings before the decisive inning.
GAME TWO
Northern Colorado responded with a more complete effort in the nightcap, jumping out to an early lead and trading runs with Wichita State through the first three innings. Jaden Stone continued his strong day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a double, while Jake Bullard drove in the Bears first run of the game with an RBI single in the opening inning.
The Bears tied the game in the third when Logan Pruski singled and Zeke Minic followed with a two-run single to bring home Stone and Easton Bryant, knotting the score at 3–3 and giving Northern Colorado momentum heading into the middle innings.
Wichita State regained the lead in the bottom of the third with a two-run double and added insurance in the fourth and sixth innings. Northern Colorado continued to apply pressure late, drawing multiple walks in the seventh and putting runners on base, but was unable to capitalize and close the gap.
Stone, Bullard, Pruski, Minic and Mason Griffin each recorded a hit in the nightcap, while Bryant reached base three times on walks. Lucas Stone started on the mound in game two, and the Bears used four pitchers in relief as they worked through a deep Wichita State lineup in the series finale.
UP NEXT: The Bears travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for a four-game series against New Mexico. The series begins Friday, February 20, with first pitch set for 2 p.m. MST.
