Riley Kaali-Nagy scores the first goal of the 2025 season for the Bears.
OMAHA, Neb. – The UNC Bears kicked off their 2025 season with an energetic and disciplined showing, battling to a 1-1 draw in their opener against Omaha. From the opening whistle, the Bears brought intensity and purpose, and it didn't take long for their efforts to be rewarded.
In the 20th minute, Riley Kaali-Nagy broke the deadlock with a cross ball from Sunnie Yarnell (#35). The goal not only gave the Bears an early 1-0 lead but also marked the team's first goal of the season.
UNC held the lead well into the second half before Omaha's Kendall Dobberstein (#10) found the equalizer in the 75th minute, capitalizing on a well-timed chance to level the score.
Goalkeeper Maddie Smith (#1) was key in securing the result, making four crucial saves under pressure. The match was evenly contested throughout, with both teams recording 10 total shots and five on target.
"Obviously, you want the win," said Head Coach Tim Barrera. "But I think the draw was a fair result. Everything was even out there. Getting results on the road is always good. We got strong performances from a lot players, and that's how we'll keep finding our way. Overall, I thought it was a solid effort. We had some good chances, but so did they."
The Bears continue their opening weekend in Omaha, returning to the pitch on Sunday at 10 a.m. for a neutral-site matchup against Oral Roberts. "Oral Roberts has a lot of experienced players," Barrera noted. "It should be an interesting match".
