Bears Flash Offense Early, Battle to the End in Close Loss at St. Thomas
4/6/2025 2:59:00 PM | Baseball
Northern Colorado jumps out to 6-0 lead behind Wagner’s homer and Kenny’s clutch bat before late surge lifts Tommies
The Bears (8-21, 3-9 Summit) built an early 6-0 lead through five innings behind timely hitting and some defensive miscues by the Tommies, before St. Thomas (16-10, 10-1 Summit) mounted a six-run eighth inning to steal the win.
UNC wasted no time getting on the board with two runs in the first inning on a two-RBI single to right by catcher Craig Kenny. The Bears added on in the second with a two-run homer from Kai Wagner to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Two more runs came across in the fifth as back-to-back errors by the Tommies extended the inning. Kenny reached on a miscue at first base, scoring Wagner, before Keaton Fisher's groundout brought in another to make it 6-0.
St. Thomas finally broke through in the sixth, scoring three runs on a pair of doubles to cut the deficit in half. The Bears got one back in the eighth on a ground-ball double play, but it would prove to be their final tally of the day.
Northern Colorado carried a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the eighth, but the Tommies loaded the bases and took advantage. Joe Vos delivered a two-RBI single to pull within two, and Brigs Richartz followed with a momentum-shifting grand slam to give St. Thomas its first lead of the afternoon at 9-7.
Jack Tuttle (2-3) took the loss for the Bears after allowing three runs in the eighth. Starter Jake Storey went 5.2 innings, giving up just two earned runs on six hits.
Kenny reached base three times and drove in two, while Wagner scored three times and finished 2-for-4 with his homer. Brandon Sanchez also added a double for the Bears.
UP NEXT
The Bears will travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Wednesday at 2 p.m. to resume their suspended game against Air Force, which was halted on February 25 due to insufficient lighting. The game is tied 10-10 after nine innings. Once the suspended game is completed, the teams will begin their regularly scheduled matchup for Wednesday.
The Bears will return home April 11-13 for a three game Summit League series against Oral Roberts.
