A LOOK AT THE BEARS
With the heart of Summit League play underway, Northern Colorado baseball gears up for a busy week, beginning with a midweek clash against in-state foe Air Force before hosting a three-game conference series at Jackson Field.
Â
The Bears (8-21, 3-9 Summit) face a familiar opponent in Air Force on Wednesday. The two programs have met more than 60 times since 2003, with the Falcons holding a 34-26 advantage. Their most recent meeting on Feb. 25 ended in a rare 10-10 tie due to suspension. UNC will look to snap a two-game skid in the series and build on recent offensive strides. The Bears have historically played the Falcons tough at home, posting a 13-16 record in Greeley—including a 26-9 blowout win in 2010.
Â
The weekend brings a visit from Summit League heavyweight Oral Roberts, who remains undefeated in the all-time series (13-0-1) against UNC. The teams tied 5-5 earlier this season in Greeley—Northern Colorado's first non-loss in the series—and the Bears will aim to carry momentum into this second showdown.
Â
Offensively, the Bears are seeing standout production from several bats. Brett Barber leads the way with a .357 average and .896 OPS through 24 games, while Kai Wagner boasts a team-high 28 RBI and four home runs, along with a .963 OPS. Jake King and Jake Bullard are also hitting above .300, with King racking up 10 doubles and 19 RBI in 29 starts.
Â
As a group, UNC is averaging nearly 7 runs per game with a .277 team batting average and .377 OBP—proof of a steady approach at the plate under third-year head coach Mike Anderson.
Â
On the mound, Murphy Gienger has anchored the rotation with seven starts and a team-best 42.0 innings, striking out 48 batters with a 5.36 ERA. Jake Storey has made eight starts, logging 35.2 innings and 24 strikeouts.
Â
SCOUTING AIR FORCE
(Wednesday | April 9 | 2 p.m.)
The Falcons are coming off an impressive 18-8 win over San Diego State in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday, April 6th. Air Force has had a solid home record this season, going 6-3 at Erdle Field, and will hope to continue their strong play in front of their home crowd.
Â
Air Force's offense has been explosive recently, particularly in their 18-8 win over San Diego State, where they put up double digits for the third time in their last six victories. Senior outfielder Walker Zapp has been the key offensive player, leading the team with a .339 batting average and a team-high .587 slugging percentage. Zapp has also contributed 4 home runs, 27 RBIs, and has a .417 on-base percentage. He will be a key player for the Falcons in this midweek matchup.
Â
Other players who have contributed to Air Force's offensive success include Christian Taylor (.316 AVG, .810 OPS), Alex Adams (.305 AVG), and Zach Peters (.284 AVG, 7 doubles, 2 home runs). These hitters will need to continue their strong performances as they face off against Northern Colorado's pitching staff.
Â
On the mound, the Falcons will look to Patrick Davidson, who has been one of the team's most consistent pitchers this season with a 3.52 ERA and a .203 batting average against. He's recorded 23 strikeouts in 23 innings and will look to give Air Force a quality start in this home game.
Â
However, Dylan Rogers (10.16 ERA) has struggled this season and will be hoping for a bounce-back performance after his rough outings earlier this year. Air Force will need solid pitching depth to compete against a Northern Colorado team that has shown offensive depth and consistency.
Â
