Late Offensive Surge Pushes Tommies Past Bears in Tight Summit League Battle
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Northern Colorado dropped a tightly contested Summit League matchup to St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon, falling 5-3 at Koch Diamond after the Tommies used a three-run sixth inning to erase a UNC lead and take control down the stretch.
The Bears (8-20, 3-8 Summit) struck early, putting up runs in the first, second and fifth innings to take a 3-1 lead. Senior Tony Castonguay was clutch at the plate, logging two RBIs on a productive out and a single, while Carter Monda added an RBI knock in the second.
Trevor Landen delivered a solid start on the mound for UNC, holding the Tommies to just one run over five innings with three strikeouts and one walk in his 76-pitch outing.
St. Thomas (15-10, 9-1 Summit) flipped the momentum in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run frame, capitalizing on a pair of sacrifice flies and a perfectly placed bunt single to take a 4-3 lead. Joe Vos tacked on an insurance run in the eighth with an RBI double to right-center, finishing the day 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk.
Dylan Smith was charged with the loss for the Bears, surrendering three runs on three hits in one inning of relief. Despite a clean final two frames from Mason Bright, UNC's offense couldn't find a late answer, going hitless over the final four innings.
Kai Wagner and Ethan Mooser each recorded a hit and a run scored, while Castonguay's RBI single in the fifth gave the Bears their final lead of the game.
On the other side, Walker Retz improved to 4-0 with a quality start for St. Thomas, tossing seven innings and striking out four. Kody Dalen earned his first save of the season with a sharp two-inning closeout.
