Bears nearly erase 7-3 deficit but drop 7-6 heartbreaker to even series in Greeley

GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado rallied in the ninth but ultimately fell just short, dropping a 7-6 decision to Omaha on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field. With the loss, the Bears fell to 15-25 (7-13 Summit) on the year, while Omaha improved to 14-23 (8-12 Summit).

Northern Colorado trailed by four heading into their final at-bat but nearly pulled off the comeback. Craig Kenny delivered a clutch two-run single to pull the Bears within two, and Dalton Miller followed with an RBI single to make it a one-run game. With the tying run on second and the winning run on third, Omaha's Oliver Mabee shut the door to pick up the save.

Omaha built its lead early, scoring one in the third and three more in the fourth, capitalizing on two Northern Colorado errors. Tyler Bishop delivered the big blow, a two-run homer in the seventh that pushed the Mavericks' advantage to 6-2.

Northern Colorado scratched across runs in the fourth, fifth, and seventh to stay within striking distance. Kai Wagner sparked the offense with an RBI triple in the fifth, while Jake King and Kenny each added RBIs.

Tanner Foerstch (2-1) picked up the win for Omaha, scattering seven hits and two runs across five innings. Mabee earned his third save of the season with a gritty finish in the ninth.

Trevor Landen (1-3) took the loss for Northern Colorado, allowing four runs (three earned) in 3.2 innings of work.

Offensively, Kenny paced the Bears with four hits and three RBIs, while Wagner tallied three hits, including a triple. Jake Bullard added a double and scored twice.

Despite outhitting Omaha 13-11, Northern Colorado was undone by four defensive errors and missed opportunities early.

The two teams will square off in the rubber match Sunday at noon back at Jackson Field.
